Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg), Salzburg

#Lookout, #Castle, #Must See
Perched atop a hill overlooking Salzburg, Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg) bears witness to more than 900 years of Austrian history, demonstrating the supreme power of the archbishops. Construction of this massive fortress began in the 11th century at the request of Archbishop Gebhard I of Helffenstein. The project continued over the centuries, finishing in 1501. Visit the regency rooms, torture chamber, illuminated lower church, and the fortress museum. At an altitude of 506 m (1,660 ft), the watchtower provides views of Salzburg. • Not so the Castle impresses as the view, once located at the highest point of Salzburg. You can climb with 2 different ways, either with feet or with the cable car which has cost €16.

  • The view from across the river past the Old Town to the HohenSalzburg fortress / castle on the hill made for a great photo shoot and a nice walk (about 5km one way from my hotel on the banks of the ri...  more »

  • It is best to know some of the history of the fortress before getting there ( will help u to relate what u see ) .. the fortress can be scaled up and down through the lift - Funicular or just hike it ( there are steps and then it an inclined path _ which is quiet steep). The views from the fortress are amazing , a definite must do .. no point coming to Salzburg and skipping the views from the Fortress.. The fortress has 4 museums within it, all relating to its history and artifacts. Best is to buy the all inclusive ticket which will saves u time and effort .
  • One of the must visit places when you are in Salzburg. This fort is worth the visit in all seasons. As you can see different landscapes. The view of the city is amazing from the top. We have always used the train to go up never tried by foot. The fort itself is well maintained and is interesting to understand the working of king. Kids might get bored here so plan your time. • Very cool fortress with an extensive history. Currently under a lot of construction which took away a bit from the impression but still worth the visit. Museum was nice. The walk up is taxing as stated by others. We road the Funicular for a few Euros more. Much more efficient. Nice view of the entire city from the top.
  • This fortress is an absolutely amazing place to visit. It's historical, dating back nearly 1000 years, has amazing views, and is architecturally interesting. The audio tour is short but has amazing views and historical information, and the museums are interesting. Note that in the off season, some areas are closed for updates and maintenance, but it is still well worth it. The restaurant patio with a view is an incredible place to lunch during your visit.
  • We arrived early and were able to see the princes room for free before 11am using our Salzburg Card (excellent purchase). The decadent rooms were outstanding and the information points were comprehensive yet concise. Other exhibits downstairs included a chronical display of the Salzburg military history as well as a 30 minute audio assisted (free) tour of the prison tour with addition information about the development of the structure itself and of course a panoramic explanation of the views from the very top. Lovely staff and a great way to spend the morning. (3 hours spent here, could go a bit quicker but we wanted to see everything.)
