Art Museum Museum

The Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg is picturesquely situated high above the rooftops of the old town of Salzburg and offers new, contemporary architecture for large-scale exhibitions and presentations of the museum's own holdings an international context. The museum offers an ideal setting for presentations of the museum’s own comprehensive collection and large-scale temporary exhibitions of international contemporary art.

The Museum der Moderne Rupertinum, a baroque town palace built by the archbishops, located in the immediate vicinity of Festival Hall and Cathedral precinct, has been adapted for the presentation of modern art. The two buildings of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg offer 3.000 m2 of exhibition space for thematic and monographic exhibitions of 20th and 21st centry art, as well as presentations of graphics and photography.

  • Explorative, original and also disturbing in the precisely correct way that art should be - making you think.  more »
  • Who would like to have art on the fast and the city has pass, is right here. Unfortunately, the reception was slightly rough and the air very stuffy and foul smelling. Without an audio tour, it was somewhat difficult to understand the exact meaning of the rooms. However, the interactive elements made the visit quite amusing! And large, it was a lighter museum visit which you can insert when you're in Salzburg at the University place times in between.

  • The Rupertinum shows modern and contemporary art, and contains the most important collection of Austrian photography. Friedensreich Hundertwasser designed the facade, this has resulted in some Windows in the so-called tongue beard window framings.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
