#12 of 21 in Museums in Salzburg

The Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg is picturesquely situated high above the rooftops of the old town of Salzburg and offers new, contemporary architecture for large-scale exhibitions and presentations of the museum's own holdings an international context. The museum offers an ideal setting for presentations of the museum’s own comprehensive collection and large-scale temporary exhibitions of international contemporary art.

The Museum der Moderne Rupertinum, a baroque town palace built by the archbishops, located in the immediate vicinity of Festival Hall and Cathedral precinct, has been adapted for the presentation of modern art. The two buildings of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg offer 3.000 m2 of exhibition space for thematic and monographic exhibitions of 20th and 21st centry art, as well as presentations of graphics and photography.

  • The museum was good. I don't really like modern art but found the William Kentridge section quite interesting. The views over Salzburg are superb from the museum and the café is good, but quite expens...  more »

  • You can have a overview of the town from the top of this museum. I liked it better than Hohensalzburg. You can just take a lift ticket if you are not interested in the museum itself. The city card giv...  more »

  • Oh modern art.... you have been sent to try our patience. An austere, functional building with a varying set if displays. You may get lucky, you may get angry.
  • Apparently this museum is known more for its view of the city than the art it houses. The view was pretty great, but honestly it was too far to get a good shot of detail. I think Kapuziner Kloster has a better view. The museum had so much art on display it became exhausting to look at. I went back to the viewing deck for one more glimpse of the city before leaving just because of how much the ticket costs.
  • Great location of the restaurant terrace - fabulous views over the city.
  • The first reception was unkind man, he made us unhappy. Never recommend to my friend. Nothing special at all.
  • Lovely view of Salzburg - very expensive for the lift unless you have a Salzburg card - god awful looking lump of concrete that contains horrendously art the inside is so appalling awful grey concrete lacking any beauty - quite the most dreadful place in a city of beauty- as prince Charles might say a carbuncle on the face of a favourite uncle" please please avoid this place... just a polite suggestion.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
