Mirabell Palace, Salzburg

4.4
#1 of 368 in Parks in Austrian Alps
Built as a token of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich's love for his mistress, Mirabell Palace is perhaps best known as the backdrop of "The Sound of Music." The former palace was built in 1606 and now houses the offices of the mayor and municipal council. The boxwood gardens contain mythology-themed statues from 1730, as well as four groups of sculptures representing the four elements. If you're a fan of "The Sound of Music," don't miss the horse fountain, where the von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi." A stroll through the gardens will jog many memories from the film. • It was Beautiful, I would expect even more so in Spring / Summer - I was there in Winter! You must view the Marble Room - gorgeous, it is also where Concerts are held. The Gardens, again Lovely This i...  more »
  • Well laid out gardens with plenty of sights to reference to the Sound of Music film. No fees charged to enjoy the sights. Worth a visit.  more »
  • Short trip to Salzburg (visit Rupertus Terme Ball Reichenhall). Stroll through the old town, the Cathedral, Mozart's birthplace, the Hohensalzburg Fortress and, of course, Park Mirabellengarten. A small park with a fountain, Palace and garden dwarfs-a very beautiful place that must-see, being in Salzburg.

  • Beautiful location part of the sound of music filmed in here. Wonderful gardens and amazing roses. My wife loved it.
  • Good place to go for a stroll, rest, read a book, go on a picnic and take photos. Garden is beautiful; and you will find scenic statues. It's not too big (not as big as Schönbrunn in Vienna), so it's an easy stroll. A lot of tourists
  • Nice. Just a lot of gardens and flowers. If you're looking for a nice stroll and maybe a spot to sit and relax, this is it. Don't expect too much.
  • The best view in town. It's the perfect photo shoot spot. Also, great place to have some rest from the long walks, with lots of benches and a tasty gelato treat by the entrance. The park is free and is open all day long.
  • Should have spent longer here, but was running short on time. Gardens were nice in November, should be incredible in summer or spring.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
