Hellbrunn Castle (Schloss Hellbrun), Salzburg

#3 of 90 in Historic Sites in Austrian Alps
Architectural Building Castle
Built as a summer day residence for Markus Sittikus (who was both a prince and an archbishop), Hellbrunn Castle (Schloss Hellbrun) is famous for its trick fountains. The palace was built from 1613 to 1619 as a place of celebration. Sittikus designed the fountains and water-powered figures in the palace's park to entertain and confuse his guests. The trick fountains spray at seemingly random moments, so be prepared to get a little bit wet. Visit the grottos to see representations of Greek mythology, and watch the water-powered show of Perseus freeing Andromeda and Apollo flaying Marsyas. Walk through the palace to get a feel for how the prince and his noble guests celebrated. The park was designed as a show of contrasts of light and dark, fire and water. • For a history teacher with a girlfriend who has absolutely nothing with history, this was the perfect getaway. A efteling visit combined with beautiful renaissance architecture and art, with information on the history of the building. The Wasserspiele tour is highly recommended and costs 12.59 per person. It is also very recommended if you have children.

  • Schloss Hellbrunn itself is quite boring if I am honest. You can take an audio tour through the house, and it gives you information about Marcus Sittikus (an Archbishop). Nice if you are into the hist...  more »
  • Should you watch, small water surprises mus likely to travel well with bus possible and in about 20 minutes from the old town can be reached, had hardly any waiting time, be - but everything clean water recommended Salzburg card use and as a result several attractions on the day. • The trick fountains and gardens are ok. Interiors of Schloss have nice frescoes, apart from that there is nothing interesting. Only first floor is open to public, it won't take more than half an hour to see it. The trick fountains can be seen with a guided tour only, though one can walk around rest of the gardens for free, just like the gardens of most of the palaces and castles in the area.
  • Archbishops tricky fountain games. Watch over your electronic devices, they might get wet. Interesting summer palace with easy access with bus 25.
  • Calm place with great space to walk around.. The alps and the city view is amazing... You have to climb a bit to get that view but its really worth it!!
  • Another must see place to visit and very rich history
  • Beautiful area to walk around. Fountains weren't open yet but still a fun place.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
