Hellbrunn Castle (Schloss Hellbrun), Salzburg

(4.5/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web)
Built as a summer day residence for Markus Sittikus (who was both a prince and an archbishop), Hellbrunn Castle (Schloss Hellbrun) is famous for its trick fountains. The palace was built from 1613 to 1619 as a place of celebration. Sittikus designed the fountains and water-powered figures in the palace's park to entertain and confuse his guests. The trick fountains spray at seemingly random moments, so be prepared to get a little bit wet. Visit the grottos to see representations of Greek mythology, and watch the water-powered show of Perseus freeing Andromeda and Apollo flaying Marsyas. Walk through the palace to get a feel for how the prince and his noble guests celebrated. The park was designed as a show of contrasts of light and dark, fire and water. • The Hellbrunn Palace grounds are amazing, and I liken them to Versailles in quality, but quite a bit smaller. There's many well manicured gardens and lawns, as well as statues of various Greek figured...  more »

  • Beautiful area to walk around. Fountains weren't open yet but still a fun place.
  • Cool place. Summer visit is a must, if you want to enjoy all that surroundings has to offer.
  • The palace building itself is an interesting and well designed museum but I was a bit disappointed that you can’t see more of it in its original interior design. The real highlight here are the ‘trick fountains’ and they’re great for visitors of all ages. You have to see the fountains as a tour where the guide will show you all the interactive parts of the display. I don’t want to give too much away but let’s just say you should be prepared to get a little wet (which is nice and refreshing on a summer day!).
  • The ChristmasMarket was phenomenal- especially at night with the lights. Allow yourself to get lost, wander around and find campfires and smores, farm animals for the kids to pet, sculpture gardens. Simply incredible- best family activity ever.
  • Splendid place, especially with all of the Christmas decorations. I was there at the end of November, and the Christmas market was positioned in front.
