Getreidegasse, Salzburg

4.4
Breathe the atmosphere of centuries past by shopping at Getreidegasse. Altstadt's most famous shopping street features dozens of shops. Browse through jewelry, the latest fashions, antiques, leather, paper goods, perfumes, and a delicatessen. Along the street, you'll also find high, narrow houses tightly nestled together. Pay attention to the skillfully crafted guild signs above restaurants, shops, and workshops. You can walk by the birth house of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at Getreidegasse 9, where the great composer lived until he was 17. Do not miss the famous "puppet woman"  with her brown basket, who has been selling puppets since 1987. • The Getreidegasse, or "Grain Lane" is a pedestrian zone and a shopping district, analogous to Kärntnerstraße in Vienna's First District, but far more quaint. This, too, was originally a Roman road Mer...  more »
  • This shopping street looks attractive at first sight. The state name is quite appropriate. Getreide refers to turbulent and this is a lively shopping street! Duration and pressure, but do not stop there. Run through it and see is at least as much fun as buying. The narrow, elongated head dates back to the middeeuwen. That reflected: fur decorated voorpoort, ornate signboards, charming courtyards, Baroque/Gothic facades with ornate stairs are a point of interest in itself. There is artfully worked with marble, that comes from the Untersberg mountain. The Sun barely reaches the courtyards, vistas and passages. Look a little further, because indoor spaces are hidden from view in the arcades and galleries. Everywhere there are vistas. Marvel at the shop Windows with traditional Tracht: chic dirndls and beautiful. Who here actually be carried. A visit to one of the coffee houses is what pricey, but something delicious to hear such a konditorei there quite a bit.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
