Franziskanerkirche, Salzburg

4.7
A fusion of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles, Franziskanerkirche represents one of Salzburg's oldest churches. Stop by the church, located in the heart of the city's Old Town, and admire the exterior's medieval construction, dating from the 1200s. Its footprint is squat, its roof is relatively steep, and its facade features high arched windows. Make your way inside and note the change in appearance as you transition through the naves and vaulted ceilings to the original basilica. Wander through the different chapels within, and be sure to view the religious works of art and Baroque decorations that contrast with the rest of the building. • An unusual church with the Interior in the form of the arena! I honestly did not expect what I see! Very nice interior! Even lingered longer than usual!

  • Almost next to the Sankt Petr Kirche stands this particular Church, built in the Romanesque style and of which little remains (a gateway and aisle), but then reworked in Gothic style but also with Baroque influences, as in the main altar and the choir. Some interesting works, especially statues of 15th-16th century, but also various chapels with frescoes (like that of the martyrdom of St Sebastian). With the nearby church Sank Peter ... the most beautiful part of the city

  • This beautiful and complex mix of styles is that of the Franciscans. Originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, today belongs to the order of the Franciscans. Their styles range from the Romanesque original to the rear Gothic and ornate Baroque chapels. Inside imposing seen by high columns and arches. Its origin dates back to the 15th century or perhaps earlier.

  • Now THIS church is really special. I've gotta admit I am not a huge fan of Baroque (it's just too much for me), but the way this one is decorated and those funny little details you can find... yeah, it sort of convinced me Baroque wasn't that bad afterall.
  • Great sightseeing
  • I was not inside the church but from outside looks interesting
  • Opening hours: daily 6.30am-7.30 pm No visits during mass!
  • Stunning!

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
