A&O Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, Salzburg

#4 of 17 in Transportation in Austria
Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station in Salzburg, capital of the federal state of Salzburg in Austria. It is the most important station in the agglomeration of Salzburg, and a major transportation hub in western Austria.OverviewFor a long time, Salzburg Hauptbahnhof has been a border station at the Austrian border with Germany. It serves both the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and the Deutsche Bahn AG. It also forms a junction between several ÖBB local and long-distance transport routes. At Salzburg Hbf, the Western Railway from Vienna and Linz links with the Rosenheim–Salzburg railway, on which, along with international trains, so-called ÖBB corridor services make express connections with the Tyrol and the Vorarlberg, via the German Corner at Rosenheim. Another main line, the Salzburg-Tyrol railway, heads from Salzburg Hbf in a southerly direction via Bischofshofen and Zell am See to Wörgl Hauptbahnhof. In Schwarzach-St. Veit, yet another main line, the Tauern Railway, branches off from this line.

This is a recently renovated (and nicely done so) train station. It is very connected (right across the street) to the buses of the area. As someone who likes a train station to put them close to the ...  more »

The train station has lots of shops and escalators up to the tracks, and I saw at least two elevators for those with lots of luggage or a wheelchair, etc.. As train stations go, this one is pretty nic...  more »

The hotel was clean and located right near the main station. But apart from that, one has to pay for bed linen and towel. Also, they ask you to use "pay and use" lockers when you arrive before the 3 pm check-in time and for average sized bags, the locker charges can be 4 euros. Same for the check-out day. Lucky for that after arguing for a while, the receptionist let me keep my bags in the ski-room. But i guess i was lucky ! I would not recommend a hostel like this which charges you for luggage for a few hrs before check-in and after checkout.

Very big, open hostel. Clean, simple, very nice private rooms w/ own bathroom. Good bar and late night food open 24hrs. Friendly and helpful staff. Relaxing 25min walk along the river to city center.

There is a reason why the A&O Salzburg is considered the flashship store of the A&O chain. It got renovated recently and looks awesome now. We had very friendly and young staff that liked to explain everything to us. Our room was clean and new. However, it was kinda dark due to the buildings that surround the hotel room, so it felt a bit of a prison cell. Also, you can not open the windows fully. You can only tilt it. Furthermore, the website do not explain clearly that you need a hanger lock for the closet. All in all, we enjoyed our stay. If you consider to be out and about the whole day anyway and only need a hotel room to rest, the A&O is doing a great job for that!

Bad experience. I was over charged. The staff behavior was bad. It is more like hotel than a hostel. Not worth the money.

Great interiors and common area. Recently renovated. Lockers are available outside room, but aren't free. Very close to Salzburg central station. 1.5kms from most attractions.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
