Lookout
5 Fingers is a free viewing platform in the Dachstein Mountains of Upper Austria, on Mount Krippenstein. It was named "5 Fingers" by virtue of its hand-like shape. It has been called the "most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps." The individual fingers, which are approximately 4m long fingers, are built over a precipice of about 400m depth. The viewing platform is less than a 20 minute walk from the Krippenstein Station of the Dachstein cable car line.Features• On the first finger a metal frame has been mounted, so that visitors can take a framed photo of themselves as a souvenir.• The second finger is equipped with a glass bottom which allows visitors to look down into the abyss below.• The third finger is shorter than all others and is not accessible all the way. It has a springboard at the end, and symbolizes the freedom of the mountains.• The fourth finger has a hole in the floor that allows a free view into the abyss.• At the fifth finger a telescope is available free of charge. The observation deck is illuminated at night until midnight. It can be easily seen with the bare eye as far away as the towns of Hallstatt and Obertraun.

  • It was a shame, impossible to go snowshoeing in March, a Blizzard and fog we prevent see two metres, the place promises a lot, because of its height and location but if bad weather rain etc below, not worth a try, would be very difficult to reach and dobre all the views would not exist

  • Must visit place but be careful as it's open for limited times even during summer. We missed visiting the ice caves for the same reason And walked up to five fingers. Must see! We visited during the m...  more »
more »

  • This is a great way to spend the afternoon if you're visiting Hallstatt. Only a 10 minute drive to the lift that brings you up the mountain. Once there you can hike several trails. The five fingers trail isn't very long? it's says it's 30 minutes but if you're not stopping for photos (which you undoubtedly will) it won't nearly that long. Once at the five fingers you will take in amazing views of Hallstatt lake and town while standing over a 1300 meter cliff. You will see lots of paraglider's as well. After you hike you can enjoy a good meal and a beer at the restaurant. We got the spaztle which I highly recommend.
  • if you come during sunshine, you can enjoy all mountains arround, as well view on Hallstadt. easy to get here from cable car.
  • What a great place for views and self reflection. Once you are at the top you will he memorized. When you get off the second lift it is a 30 min walk if you are focused. If you are like us and are distracted then maybe an hour. There are yellow signs that tell you where to go.
  • Fantastic place if you have good weather to see the peaks in their splendour. The Panoramic views across the mountains and down into Valleys are wonderful.
  • A fantastic reward for the walk atop the mountains from the cable car. The views are just spectacular!
