5 Fingers, Obertraun

5 Fingers is a free viewing platform in the Dachstein Mountains of Upper Austria, on Mount Krippenstein. It was named "5 Fingers" by virtue of its hand-like shape. It has been called the "most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps." The individual fingers, which are approximately 4m long fingers, are built over a precipice of about 400m depth. The viewing platform is less than a 20-minute walk from the Krippenstein Station of the Dachstein cable car line.Features• On the first finger a metal frame has been mounted, so that visitors can take a framed photo of themselves as a souvenir.• The second finger is equipped with a glass bottom which allows visitors to look down into the abyss below.• The third finger is shorter than all others and is not accessible all the way. It has a springboard at the end, and symbolizes the freedom of the mountains.• The fourth finger has a hole in the floor that allows a free view into the abyss.• At the fifth finger a telescope is available free of charge. The observation deck is illuminated at night until midnight. It can be easily seen with the bare eye as far away as the towns of Hallstatt and Obertraun.

  • Great place for a stroll. Wonderful lookout to Hallstatt. Located at an altitude of 2100 m, in the summer it was warm. You can walk along several routes. A large and free parking. Beautiful views with fanikulera.

  • Awesome experience. The best part was the hike from mid station to the top one. The view is great. Just be careful as in the summer this place probably is super crowded and you'll have to wait quite a bit for your picture in one finger! There's cable cars that goes to the tops if you're not a big hiker!
  • Its a heavenly place, one should not miss in Austria... Awesome weather in May - Aug
  • Fantastic view of halstat from the mountain top. It will take 30 minute from the get off station but definetly worth to go there.
  • A must see. Most exquisit scenery. As if walking in a dream! Lovely restaurant.
  • We took the ice cave tour, was lovely. They kept it very close to its natural state unlike many other that became “tourist shows”. The guide spoke german and English. Was very nice. After that we went up to the 5 fingers view. Its 30 min walking, but the view is breathtaking. You can see Hallstadt lake and it’s awesome. Worth the price, we paid for both of the attractions around 40 euro for each.
