5 Fingers is a free viewing platform in the Dachstein Mountains of Upper Austria, on Mount Krippenstein. It was named "5 Fingers" by virtue of its hand-like shape. It has been called the "most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps." The individual fingers, which are approximately 4m long fingers, are built over a precipice of about 400m depth. The viewing platform is less than a 20 minute walk from the Krippenstein Station of the Dachstein cable car line.Features• On the first finger a metal frame has been mounted, so that visitors can take a framed photo of themselves as a souvenir.• The second finger is equipped with a glass bottom which allows visitors to look down into the abyss below.• The third finger is shorter than all others and is not accessible all the way. It has a springboard at the end, and symbolizes the freedom of the mountains.• The fourth finger has a hole in the floor that allows a free view into the abyss.• At the fifth finger a telescope is available free of charge. The observation deck is illuminated at night until midnight. It can be easily seen with the bare eye as far away as the towns of Hallstatt and Obertraun.

  • We took the cable car up the mountain which had spectacular views but we could not find the path to Five fingers so we just got something to eat and came back down. There are 2 levels on the cable car...  read more »
  • if you come during sunshine, you can enjoy all mountains arround, as well view on Hallstadt. easy to get here from cable car.
  • The view from 5 fingers and the cable car ride up is stunning. €30 I thought was a bit steep, landscape quite barren at the top so hiking around the five fingers did get a little boring.
  • Spectacular ride by cable-car and view when you get there. Easy walking access at the top of the mountain; easy access to the mountain-top by cable car.
  • Worth the hike. We enjoyed every minute of it. Be warned we went in may and we still had to trudge through a foot of snow.
  • What an excellent way to spend a day. Try to go on a nice day so you can see all the mountains in the background. We went for the panorama ticket and walked to the Five Fingers Lookout and the lookout in the Heritage Site Family park. We also took the third gondola and walked to the cafe about 10 minutes away. We spent a total of 6 hours here and really enjoyed it. It seemed like you could do hikes to suit any level. It's a bit expensive but totally worth it. I can't comment on the caves because we opted out. If you're staying in Hallstatt there is a public bus that runs every hour or so and you can look up times on the OBB website - if you don't have a car, this is much preferable to taking the train and walking (as it would probably be quite a bit of a walk).
  • amazing view over the alps
  • Amazing view. Don't miss it if you are in the area.
