5 Fingers is a free viewing platform in the Dachstein Mountains of Upper Austria, on Mount Krippenstein. It was named "5 Fingers" by virtue of its hand-like shape. It has been called the "most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps." The individual fingers, which are approximately 4m long fingers, are built over a precipice of about 400m depth. The viewing platform is less than a 20-minute walk from the Krippenstein Station of the Dachstein cable car line.Features• On the first finger a metal frame has been mounted, so that visitors can take a framed photo of themselves as a souvenir.• The second finger is equipped with a glass bottom which allows visitors to look down into the abyss below.• The third finger is shorter than all others and is not accessible all the way. It has a springboard at the end, and symbolizes the freedom of the mountains.• The fourth finger has a hole in the floor that allows a free view into the abyss.• At the fifth finger a telescope is available free of charge. The observation deck is illuminated at night until midnight. It can be easily seen with the bare eye as far away as the towns of Hallstatt and Obertraun.Plan a Obertraun trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

First some advice. If you go by car, go early. It's a popular place so there are many people there. Plus it's only worth to visit it if the weather is nice, otherwise you won't see much. Also a hiking... more »

Amazing site at Dachstein . We visite only the ice cave and the 5 fingers panorama view. In the cave we had a wonderfull guide . Temperatures are between 3 and -2 inside the cave and 500 steps. We do ... more »

Je kunt er naartoe met de liften, kost wel iets van 30 per kaartje dacht ik. Kan je nog combineren met de ijsgrot (betaal je wel meer). Er lag een berg sneeuw toen wij er waren, maar er waren paadjes ... more »You can go there with the lifts, the rate of 30 per ticket I thought. You can still combine with the ice cave (pay you so much more). There was a mountain snow when we were there, but there were paths snow made free. The paths were smooth, that made the walk sometimes a little scary. Care for walking shoes! Not on your flip-flops or sneakers do (at least if there is a lot of snow). We were hesitant to our dog (that may, with muzzle), but are happy that we have not done this. By the smooth paths and many people up there is that not very pleasant walk with a (young) dog. The 5 fingers I dared not on (little fear of that kind of plateaus) good, you have a great view. The photos afterwards were super, almost picturesque.

You will get the best view to Hallstatt from here. Breathtaking view. The nature trail till the 5 fingers is beautiful. We went in may and trail was still snowy and it was enjoyable. :)

Very beautiful view from the top. Cable car a bit expensive - 30 Euro. Last ride back at 17-00. On the top you can take snow shoes (for free). We were in the May and there was a lot of snow (so put proper clothes and shoes). From top station you should walk about 20-30 minutes to 5 Fingers.

Must-visit sight! Perfect mountain panorama. Just mind the weather forecast

Beautiful view. However in my opinion the view from the top of Grindelwald is better. It is required that you walk to the 5 fingers, which may deter the lazier people. The walk is about 1km in length and it is advised that you use snow shoes, especially on the inclines. A big negative in my opinion was the cost of the gondola ride to the top and snow show rental, which I found to high for this experience.

Superb views over the surrounding area after an easy walk, or snow shoe hike, from the cable car station.
