Grüner See is a lake in Styria, Austria in a village named Tragöß. The lake is surrounded by the Hochschwab Mountains and forests. The name "Green Lake" originated because of its emerald-green water. The clean and clear water comes from the snowmelt from the karst mountains and has a temperature of 6-. During winter, the lake is only 1– deep and the surrounding area is used as a county park. However, in spring, when the temperature rises and snow melts, the basin of land below the mountains fills with water. The lake reaches its maximum depth of around 12m from mid-May to June and is claimed to look the most beautiful at this time. In July, the water begins to recede. The lake supports a variety of fauna such as snails, water fleas, small crabs, fly larvae, and different species of trout . The flora is not abundant because of the rocky bottom of the lake. Furthermore, the lake’s depth is variable since its inflow comes from snowmelt. The lake was popular among divers who could observe the green meadows in the edge zone of the lake particularly in June when the water is at its highest. A bridge and a bench could also be found underwater. Furthermore, trails and trees could also be seen underwater.

  • We were there end of May and to the parking lot when the first very surprised by many people who were there. For parking, we paid 2-3 EUR for the whole day. then we went a round the Lake, it was very beautiful and interesting. The water had reached at the time not yet reached its. Even though the Lake is an amazing phenomenon I find there really annoying the crowds! So be sure look at the Lake but with many visitors expected end of may in any case.

  • All years back, when the snow melts, I must to Green Lake. Pure nature. You should go during the week to see however. On the weekend, you will find no rest. To make photos are beautiful, you need no filters, the water is turquoise and the beautiful area.

  • We were advised to stop here on our way to Admont Abbey, and I'm so glad we did. There's a parking lot and from there, there are several hiking trails to and beyond the lake. It's a short little hike ...  more »

  • This is undoubtedly one of the best lakes in Austria. Visit in May so as to enjoy to the fullest. The lakes starts depleting in summer. Scuba Diving is a magical experience, grab the chance if you get to do it. Having a car is mandatory as the place is inaccessible by public transport.
  • Nice hiking trail with a glacier lake. Unfortunately no swimming or fishing is permitted because of the unique ecosystem, but you get a nice forest trail, a traditional austrian restaurant an absolutely amazing view of the surrounding mountains and easy parking (for 4 euro). Absolutely recommended
  • Perfect place for a small hiking. The pond is really green, view is breathtaking.
  • Try to go when there is a great weather
  • Very cool experience, however you are unable to dive anymore- what a shame! The drive and view are still worth it!
