Grüner See is a lake in Styria, Austria in a village named Tragöß. The lake is surrounded by the Hochschwab Mountains and forests. The name "Green Lake" originated because of its emerald-green water. The clean and clear water comes from the snowmelt from the karst mountains and has a temperature of 6-. During winter, the lake is only 1– deep and the surrounding area is used as a county park.
However, in spring, when the temperature rises and snow melts, the basin of land below the mountains fills with water. The lake reaches its maximum depth of around 12m from mid-May to June and is claimed to look the most beautiful at this time. In July, the water begins to recede.
The lake supports a variety of fauna such as snails, water fleas, small crabs, fly larvae, and different species of trout . The flora is not abundant because of the rocky bottom of the lake. Furthermore, the lake’s depth is variable since its inflow comes from snowmelt.
The lake was popular among divers who could observe the green meadows in the edge zone of the lake particularly in June when the water is at its highest. A bridge and a bench could also be found underwater. Furthermore, trails and trees could also be seen underwater.

  • A warning another winner of the beautiful place contest. Overcrowded landfill hits it best You can guess that it was once beautiful. In autumn there is actually no lake but a puddle.

  • Were unfortunately in August with not much water at the Green Lake, around the lake, however, there is a lot of garbage, partly dog excrement bags simply placed next to the lake - there are beautiful places in Styria

  • If you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, then you’re going to be slightly disappointed. Although the surrounding mountains are impressive, the lake itself is small. To be fair, we visited in August...  more »

  • Nice place for a easy walk, clean. Landscape is spectacular. Facilities near by.
  • Really cool place. Don't pay for parking if it's a slow day. Go park next to the restaurant next to the lake for free and no long walk necessary.
  • Hidden gem in Austrian mountains. Well placed parking lot, then nice stroll through woods with multiple lakes around. Worth a visit.
  • The best place in the world , feels like a fairy tail. It is the prettiest of all lakes in austria . The kush green woods make it even better. The water is really cold though since it's technically melted ice
  • Beautiful place for a hike, picnic, taking photographies... The view is astonishing. It can be crowded in sunny days. Brings something to eat cause the only avalizável restaurant is far from the trail and it will take a while to go around the lake.
