Hauptplatz, Linz

(4.1/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Ringed with historic buildings, cafes, and shops, Hauptplatz sits at the heart of Linz and is one of the largest town squares in Austria. As the city grew in importance during the medieval period, the importance of the main plaza also increased, and eventually saw the construction of the town hall during the early 1500s. You'll find a classic Germanic clock, several examples of Baroque and neo-Baroque facades and decorations, and the sizable cathedral boasting twin bell towers. Afterward, kick back with a drink or snack at one of the nearby eateries, bars, or coffeehouses. Don't miss getting an up-close look at the statue of the Holy Trinity, topped with golden angels and saints, set in the center of the square. With our custom trip planner, Linz attractions like Hauptplatz can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Beautiful square with its 13200 m² ranks among the largest in Europe which is overlooked by elegant Baroque palaces and delicious and crowded premises. In the Middle stands an impressive 20 metres high marble column dedicated to the Holy Trinity, built in 1723 as a Thanksgiving for the end of the plague in the city. From here the pedestrian mall and the famous shopping street Landstrasse. In the opposite direction you reach the Danube.

  • Charming Hauptplatz in Linz with nice little Cafe's and restaurants where you can enjoy coffee and a cake. There are a few bars as well.  more »
  • The main square itself is already worth a visit. The old town of Linz, the Lentos Kunstmuseum and Brucknerhaus Linz road shopping is located in the immediate vicinity.
