Castle Tourist Spot
Hochosterwitz Castle is considered to be one of Austria's most impressive medieval castles. It is on a 172m high Dolomite rock near Sankt Georgen am Längsee, east of the town of Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia. The rock castle is one of the state's landmarks and a major tourist attraction.LocationHochosterwitz is 664m above sea level on the rim of the historic Zollfeld plain north of Magdalensberg. It can be seen from a distance of up to 30km on a clear day.HistoryThe site was first mentioned in an 860 deed issued by King Louis the German of East Francia, donating several of his properties in the former Principality of Carantania to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. It was then named as ‘Astarwiza’, its name being of Slavic origin. In the 11th century Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg ceded the castle to the Dukes of Carinthia from the noble House of Sponheim in return for their support during the Investiture Controversy. The Sponheim dukes bestowed the fiefdom upon the family of Osterwitz, who held the hereditary office of the cup-bearer in 1209.

  • The sophisticated system with fifteen goals is a must not just for history buffs. You should take time for it in about three hours, then also opportunity in the Castle Tavern offers something to stay.

  • The Castle, which is about 25 km from Klagenfurt and is one of the best places to visit in Carinthia, is suggestively perched on top of a cliff by now guess his defensive and military nature. Fine construction, survived in good condition, it was built in 1570 to protect that part of the territory from the Turks. The climb to the Castle, to be done through 14 doors, offers beautiful views and hard work will be rewarded upon arrival when you find a cozy bar Tavern, immaculate facilities and a small shop. The visit (guided in German, but box office with €4 you can take the audioguide in Italian) to the small museum with collections of weapons, armor, and many relics of the owners of the Castle (the family Khevenhuller) Besides a curious statue of a giant (2.25 metres high!) lived in ' 500 and that was the burgomaster Shank. The most exciting elements of the visit are, in my opinion: the climb the Castle, the views from the ramps and the Castle perched atop the cliff ... less exciting the small museum and quelc shortly you'll notice inside the walls. The entrance fee you pay (with small discount with Karnten Card) ben € 11.30/person, while the elevator was not operating during our visit (July). Well worth the stop. (and maybe, if you're now meals, drop by the restaurant Tatzer at the entrance of the Castle or a parking area at the bar of the Castle)

  • A plaque at the entrance indicates that this castle belongs to the same family for 470 years and every euro you pay at the entrance is for its retention. I hope they have many visitors because I can imagine what it costs to maintain such a treat! Every aspect of this manor is great: the view from below, the views that you enjoy from the top, the hanging gardens, its internal passages, the courtyard used as a refreshment. The conditions are generally good but not a place ' lacquered '. A must if you are in Carinthia.

  • The only one Austrian castle that wasn't conquered by the enemy. Amazing view when you are looking from the side on it. The lift was out of order but it turned out for the best. The weather was fine and we walked through all 14 gates. In castle there is interesting armory museum. Also there was tall friendly guide we chatted about different things.
  • We stayed there in 1963, whilst attending an international falconry festival, as guests of the Duke, when it was a private residence. It was wonderful to stand below the castle and watch a pair of Imperial Eagles being flown from the top by a Japanese falconer. Less impressive was a banquet provided in the castle hall towards the end of our stay.
  • In my opinion the most impressive castle in Austria - "outstanding" in every way! Nice walk through the 14 gates with views all around. On top you can refill your energy in a nice restaurant and visit the museum. Highly recommend!
  • Impressive castle with 14 gates, each different. Great views! Interesting museum and nice restaurant at the top with a vegan option on the menu. Recommended for the whole family!
  • Huge fortress with impressive fortifications and a very cool museum. There's a cafe in the courtyard and several spots to get souvenirs.
