Trip Planner: Europe / Austria / Austrian Alps / Carinthia / Launsdorf / Hochosterwitz Castle (Burg Hochosterwitz)
Hochosterwitz Castle is considered to be one of Austria's most impressive medieval castles. It is on a 172m high Dolomite rock near Sankt Georgen am Längsee, east of the town of Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia. The rock castle is one of the state's landmarks and a major tourist attraction.LocationHochosterwitz is 664m above sea level on the rim of the historic Zollfeld plain north of Magdalensberg. It can be seen from a distance of up to 30km on a clear day.HistoryThe site was first mentioned in an 860 deed issued by King Louis the German of East Francia, donating several of his properties in the former Principality of Carantania to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. It was then named as ‘Astarwiza’, its name being of Slavic origin. In the 11th century Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg ceded the castle to the Dukes of Carinthia from the noble House of Sponheim in return for their support during the Investiture Controversy. The Sponheim dukes bestowed the fiefdom upon the family of Osterwitz, who held the hereditary office of the cup-bearer in 1209.To visit Hochosterwitz Castle (Burg Hochosterwitz) and get the most from your holiday in Launsdorf, create itinerary details personal to you using our Launsdorf trip maker app .

Gita di coppia giornaliera in Austria. Ho rivisitato il castello dopo quasi 10 anni, ed ha sempre il suo fascino. Hanno risistemato la salita a piedi, resa molto più turistica e agevole a tutti. When I was there for the first time, say that was a bit more wild. So excellent renovation! :-) Modernized and expanded the Museum in the Castle, and open areas (for me) new. Interesting peace and quiet, beautiful landscapes. Excellent cuisine, we stopped for lunch at the Castle, eaten dishes (you can't help but try their sausage!) and not at all expensive! Staff was very friendly and helpful, despite us not understood much German! I highly recommend you go and visit the Castle!!

The only one Austrian castle that wasn't conquered by the enemy. Amazing view when you are looking from the side on it. The lift was out of order but it turned out for the best. The weather was fine and we walked through all 14 gates. In castle there is interesting armory museum. Also there was tall friendly guide we chatted about different things.

We stayed there in 1963, whilst attending an international falconry festival, as guests of the Duke, when it was a private residence. It was wonderful to stand below the castle and watch a pair of Imperial Eagles being flown from the top by a Japanese falconer. Less impressive was a banquet provided in the castle hall towards the end of our stay.

In my opinion the most impressive castle in Austria - "outstanding" in every way! Nice walk through the 14 gates with views all around. On top you can refill your energy in a nice restaurant and visit the museum. Highly recommend!

Impressive castle with 14 gates, each different. Great views! Interesting museum and nice restaurant at the top with a vegan option on the menu. Recommended for the whole family!

Huge fortress with impressive fortifications and a very cool museum. There's a cafe in the courtyard and several spots to get souvenirs.
