Central Square Marktplatz, Hallstatt
(4.5/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Once a bustling medieval center of trade and commerce, Central Square Marktplatz today is an iconic example of Austrian architecture and a nexus of the town of Hallstatt. Visit the square, nestled within the city named to the World Heritage List, and wander among a host of old buildings marked by balconies and steep roofs. You'll find that a great deal of activity takes place on the plaza--you can watch the bustle from one of the many surrounding cafes. Try some traditional Austrian fare at one of the restaurants nearby, or browse the stores for crafts and Austrian souvenirs. Be sure to grab your camera to get a shot of the statue of the Holy Trinity in the center of the square against the backdrop of 18th-century buildings and a steep, forested mountain slope. • I'm surprised with this tiny mountain town. I was in love with the place. At night (that there is no one) we went to walk and in one of the houses of the square had one older couple in a bedside table in the door that allowed you to see the peace with which they live. I recommend the ride but it takes you just walk to go there.

  • It's like a film set here.. very quiet at night. We are staying in a hotel in the square which is lovely. No cars allowed, again I think that's great. Only bad thing is the church bells start ringing ...  more »
  • Lovely little square surrounded by proper traditional Austrian chalets; some of them shops. There was a massive Christmas tree in the centre covered in fairy lights.
