Uhrturm, Graz

#2 of 74 in Things to do in Graz
Observation Deck Tourist Spot
Climb to the top of Uhrturm, the medieval clock tower offering a panoramic view of the city. Originally built as a medieval defense tower, the city paid Napoleon a ransom in 1809 to keep it from being destroyed when the other fortifications on the hill overlooking the city were conquered. The clock is unique in that the large hand shows the hour and the small one minutes. The small hand was added much later since the large one could be seen from the town at the bottom of the hill. Those with mobility challenges should take the tram or elevator to the top of the tower. Put Uhrturm at the forefront of your travel plans using our Graz travel itinerary planner.

  • Maybe it's a real symbol of the city visible from many points and offering striking views on the lower part of the town. The Tower, which is part of the remains of the Castle (Schlossberg), is a medieval building of 1560, but he saw then add (1712) the current clock. See while you will discover this charming city!

  • A visit to the Schlossberg is a must-attend event to visit Graz. The children look forward to drive again and again with the lift on the Schlossberg. Beautiful views and a good gastronomy perfectly complete the offer.

  • Beautiful clock tower dating back to the 13th century, which has been chiming on the hour since 1712. Best of all, it offers stunning views of Graz below. Well worth the 260 steps winding up the cliffside from the streets below.
  • Unbelievable panorama to the city. you can reach the Uhrturm through the stairway from South.
  • One of the oldest buildings in Graz located in Schlossberh fortress. The clock is first mentioned in 13th century but today shape is from 1560. There is a great view of surrounding area from that point and some benches to rest.

Where to stay in Graz

Austria’s second-largest city offers a large selection of accommodation options for every type of traveler. Outside of the city’s core in the Lend district are more affordable lodgings. Roughly a ten-minute walk to the Altstadt, this area provides an economical alternative while still keeping you close to the attractions. If you’re willing to compromise on privacy, the best prices are in private accommodations in local homes. Often this means sharing a bathroom with other guests and occasionally even the homeowners.
