Landmark Tourist Spot
The Baroque Mariatrost Basilica on top of the Purberg hill in Mariatrost, a district of Graz, is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites of Styria in Austria. The pilgrimage church stands prominently on top of the Purberg hill (469 m) in the northeast of Graz. It can be reached using the 200 or more steps of the Angelus stair. The basilica is classified as a Baroque building. Two front towers (61 m) and a dome, visible from a great distance, are the characteristic attributes of the church, which is enclosed by two projecting wings of a former monastery once occupied by the Pauline Fathers (1708–86) and later by the Franciscans (1842–1996).The building was begun in 1714 by Andreas Stengg and his son Johann Georg Stengg and finished in 1724. The pulpit by Veit Königer (1730/31) is the masterpiece of the furnishings. The frescoes on the ceiling by Lukas von Schram and Johann Baptist Scheidt are of particular importance. The main altar includes a statue of the Madonna originally created in the Gothic period around 1465, but altered to the Baroque style in 1695 by Bernhard Echter.

  • The eighteenth-century basilica, overlooking a Valley and is just outside Graz, is a well-known place of pilgrimage and an ideal venue for weddings. The Church, of Baroque style, has an apse, while the Interior is frescoed with a gold and marble pulpit of great value! Recommend a visit only if your stay is a few days, otherwise go to the Centre of Graz.

  • Play the pilgrim to visit this lovely church at the top of a challenging set of stairs. Worth the trek for the restful ambience and great view over the surrounding countryside.
  • Beautifully situated Baroque Basilica which you should absolutely watch and enough time for the stay should bring this place to go to.

  • The Church is in a Baroque style. Front at the altar a glass dome is in, so that the light directly on the altar! There is a part where you can light candles and you can hang also thanks customers on the wall panels. There are to buy Church also postcards and mementos to friends! There's always brochures for projects of the Church and Styria. You can put your name in a kind of guestbook and in his desires, acknowledgements and requests to God. The Church is also very nice for Hocheiten and other religious celebrations, and is highly sought after. You can either go towards the Church via a staircase or an hour a woodland path go which leads from the hilmteich pond to the Church.

Austria’s second-largest city offers a large selection of accommodation options for every type of traveler. Outside of the city’s core in the Lend district are more affordable lodgings. Roughly a ten-minute walk to the Altstadt, this area provides an economical alternative while still keeping you close to the attractions. If you’re willing to compromise on privacy, the best prices are in private accommodations in local homes. Often this means sharing a bathroom with other guests and occasionally even the homeowners.
