Kunsthaus Graz, Graz

3.4
#3 of 11 in Museums in Graz
Art Museum Architectural Building
Home to an extensive array of contemporary and modern artwork, Kunsthaus Graz serves as an architectural landmark in itself. Pay a visit to the unorthodox building and you'll see why it serves as a symbol of modern art, thanks to its blob-like construction. The museum boasts a screen on the outside made up of separate pixels projected over a curved surface. Wander the facility and explore its displays and pieces from artists around the world, focusing on works that span a wide range of contemporary topics. Join a guided tour for a more in-depth look at the museum's holdings, or download the audio guide app from the website for a self-guided tour. Be sure to check online for information regarding the museum's temporary exhibits. Kunsthaus Graz is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Graz Edition.

  • Exhibitions at the Kunsthaus are demanding, not always understandable, but in any case other than in conventional museums. Are not put off by the often obscure advertising or notice. I visited already sensational exhibitions.

  • This building sits like a giant blue-black nipple-pimple on the river mur in the lovely town of graz in the shadow of the historic castle.too weird for us. Er ist das hochskultur!!??  more »
  • The Kunsthaus in Graz is a Museum of contemporary art built when the city was cultural capital of Europe. The building itself is a piece of modern art with its strange forms that detach from the surrounding environment. Very particular.

  • I have nothing against the existence of "wacky" architecture, but that they should put something like this in the middle of the Altstadt is a real shame. Why didn't they put it somewhere soulless and horrible like Seiersberg, or down by the Messe? As for the inside of the buidling, it isn't remotely interesting. Just bare concrete everywhere. Maybe that was "edgy" when they built the place, I have no idea. The art exhibition that was on when I went ("Destruction") was pretty dire. All in all, not worth spending money on going inside but if you bought a Joanneum ticket anyway for something else, and there are no other museums you want to see with it before it runs out, and there's no-one on the street who will take your ticket and use it to see a proper museum, go inside. Good toilets which are free and open to the public. They can have another star for that.
  • Only one floor was open and we paid the full price. Still a great building to explore with a nice view on Graz.
  • Interesting building and exhibitions. I would've personally preferred the exhibitions to be more "contemporary", rather than a museum of curiosities.
  • This modern art museum has an interesting design for sure! Inside there were some modern art works and also some biology collections (mocking birds, fruit model, etc...). Was worth a visit! The top floor has a view to the old town too.
  • A building that will stand out from all the other. It is supposed to be represent the "heart" of Graz.

Where to stay in Graz

Austria’s second-largest city offers a large selection of accommodation options for every type of traveler. Outside of the city’s core in the Lend district are more affordable lodgings. Roughly a ten-minute walk to the Altstadt, this area provides an economical alternative while still keeping you close to the attractions. If you’re willing to compromise on privacy, the best prices are in private accommodations in local homes. Often this means sharing a bathroom with other guests and occasionally even the homeowners.
