The ruins of Aguntum are Roman site in East Tirol, Austria, located approximately 4 km east of Lienz in the Drau valley. The city appears to have been built to exploit the local sources of iron, copper, zinc and gold. During the early Christian era the city was the site of a bishopric, which, having ceased to be a residential diocese, is today listed by the Catholic Church as a titular see.HistoryThis area of East Tyrol was the homeland of the Laianci tribe and hilltop settlements, so far hardly investigated, crown many of the hills in the area. A trading vicus developed here at an important intersection in the Drau Valley, with one important road leading to the gold deposits in the Hohe Tauern. The oldest Roman remains are a two-roomed wooden structure discovered beneath the bath house and dated to the mid-first century BC. According to Pliny the Elder, the emperor Claudius granted Aguntum the status of municipium, a status which is attested by inscriptions, including funerary inscriptions, which refer to cultores Genii municipii Agunti. The official name was Municipium Claudium Aguntum. There does not appear to have been a military camp in this area.Aguntum was a mining and trading centre which exploited local sources of iron, copper, zinc and gold. Craftsmen in the town processed the metals to produce a range of goods which were then transported along the Roman roads. Other exports included wood, milk products (cheese) and mountain crystals from the Tauern range.Plan to see Stadt Museum Aguntum and other attractions that appeal to you using our Dolsach trip itinerary tool .

It is a rather small but clean tidy for Museum in the ratio. Very well, I think that still more research.

The Museum includes various remains of the city, well organized. Unique construction of the villa, great Roman House with typical architecture, adapted to the climate of Rome and not a place where the snow and cold. Complex of baths very well preserved and visible from above thanks to a tower. Worth the ride, even on a sweltering day in July last, at 12. In the Museum the possibility of dressing from ancient Roman and get photos.

Large Roman site, very interesting back story brought in a very modern style. Could do with an English tour book, as only about half the tour has English information.
Unfortunately the museum and access to the site were both closed when we arrived. However the view of the town is still spectacular and well labeled with the maps available. Very impressive to see from slightly above.
A Museum and the excavation of a Roman Citadel. In comparison to other Italian excavations might seem strange to find something interesting in Tyrol. Yet it is worth. The explanations and ilateriale made available (also on Italian) gives a good idea of how it was to be the Citadel. Some areas like the macellum are certainly very details and views from the tower built on purpose are very enjoyable. Consider two hours for your visit to the Museum and excavations. Obviously you have to appreciate the archaeological excavations.
Very good Museum! Information clear and comprehensible modern air-conditioned standard presents good use of today's Media Smartphone and PC
