Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, Willoughby

Discover South Australia's maritime heritage at Cape Willoughby Lighthouse. Take a guided tour to learn about the role of the region's first lighthouse in guiding ships through the Backstairs Passage between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. Listen to stories about the living and working conditions of the lighthouse's keepers, and take in commanding views of the rugged and isolated coast here. You might even spot large schools of salmon and pods of humpback, southern right, and killer whales. If you drive to Cape Willoughby, exercise caution on the rough access road. • Great views and some old whale bones are on this site. Look out for snakes especially in the warmer months. $5 fee to enter the site, plus plenty of information inside the house.  more »
  • The lighthouse is a dominant landmark on the south-east corner of Kangaroo Island. With a stormy backdrop it makes an impressive photo opportunity. The area has some unexpected finds with some cottage...  more »

  • Beautiful place. We went during an enormous storm and the tour was still amazing. There were things we couldn't do for safety reasons but what we did was spectacular.
  • The lighthouse has a fairly nice walk. It costs to go up the lighthouse, but we went on the coastal walk instead, which is a few dollars per person. However, to get to the lighthouse, you have to go through a lot of unsealed road - we managed it in a rental car without damage, but we went slowly. If you do go, be aware of this.
  • One of the main attractions on kangaroo island if I'm not mistaken. Must see. Worth the long drive
  • Tour was fantastic
  • A great lighthouse with fantastic views, and wonderful history.

Where to stay in Kangaroo Island

Although most of Kangaroo Island remains relatively underdeveloped in a commercial sense, you'll find lodgings that include everything from spacious suites to economical hostels in communities like Penneshaw and Kingscote. The most expensive accommodations on the island, private cottages and beach houses near the water generally require a two-night minimum stay. For something more flexible and less expensive, consider one of the local campgrounds, many of which offer powered and unpowered sites, as well as cozy log cabins ideal for couples andĀ families with kids.
