Cardinia Reservoir Park, Victoria

(4.2/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
Cardinia Reservoir is an Australian man-made water supply dammed reservoir. The 287000ML water store is located in Emerald-Clematis-Dewhurst in south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. Construction started in May 1970 and was completed in 1973 at a cost of more than 11.4 million. The dam that creates the impoundment is called the Cardinia Dam.HistoryAs Melbourne's water supplies struggled through the 1960s the need for additional water storage became evident. Cardinia Creek ran from the Dandenong Ranges to Western Port Bay, passing through some small but well defined hills south of the outer suburb of Emerald. This site was chosen as being suitable for a new reservoir. In 1966, plans for the construction of the Cardinia and Thomson Reservoirs were accepted by the Government of Victoria. Construction of the Tarago Reservoir commenced in 1966 and was completed in 1969. This water storage was built by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission of Victoria (SR&WSC) to improve the capacity of the water supply system to meet the ever increasing demand for water in the district. By 1967, Melbourne struggled through a severe drought and water restrictions were imposed in the summer of 196768. As a result, plans for construction of Cardinia and Thomson Reservoirs were advanced.

  • Great place to take a walk over the dam wall while enjoying the views of the surrounding hills or the parkland below the wall.

  • A peaceful and scenic park. Facilities are overall reasonably good for this park. Lots of secluded Picnic tables and wood fire BBQ ovens. Big playground for children. Kind of ironic with a great dam nearby that it lacks available drinking water. Duffeys Picnic area has been closed to vehicle access for an extended time. There are some great short walking trails where you can encounter some surprising fauna. The Dam Wall trail is popular with fitness walkers and sightseers. Scarlet and Flame Robins can be spotted there during Autumn and Winter months. Eastern Grey Kangaroos can be readily observed grazing or lounging at various locations where the grass is good.
  • 👍 Would recommend. Huge, so even though it's popular its also quiet. Bbq areas, playground, open lawns, toilet block. Lots of kangaroos. Great for kids. A few simple hiking trails as well. Big enough car park.
  • Great place for an afternoon out. Used to be better though when the other picnic areas were opened up. Also, they don't have BBQs anymore so you need to bring your own with you now.
  • Beautiful reservoir and park, wood fired barbeque facilities. Kangaroos running around in the wooded area.
  • Nice view over the reservoir and lots of kangaroos in the park. Good trip out
