Townsville Palmetum, Townsville

(4.3/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
One of three botanical gardens in the city, Townsville Palmetum features only one family of plants: the palm. The garden covers almost 17 hectares (42 acres) and includes a collection of all six palm subfamilies, with a total of over 300 species. See many rare and threatened palms, many of which can only be found in Australia, in their native habitat. The garden’s grassy areas, as well as its water features, attract a wide variety of birds, making this a favorite stop for birdwatchers from around the world. Stop by any time between sunrise and sunset for a walk on the garden’s long boardwalk, which runs through a wetland area and around a small inlet of the river Ross. • Lovely place for a cup of tea, local art to buy on the walls of the fabulous old school house that looks over the amazing gardens  more »
  • Relax under palms, or enjoy high tea at this traditional tea shop. Next to the river, so can take a walk or ride around this area. Fear for relaxation  more »
  • Fantastic selection of teas , in a glorious old former school house. Pity the lunches were a disappointment- very soggy wraps  more »

  • These are well maintained gardens with some fantastic picnic areas. The paths are very nice to walk along and are very peaceful. Dogs are permitted on a lead which is great. Well worth the visit.
  • It's a nice place for a walk around in the shade of the trees, and it's popular for weddings also.
  • Just amazing A must see for visitors
  • Beautifully presented with lovely walkways. Very inviting.
  • The Palmetum is one of Townsville's hidden treasures. I had passed this place hundreds of times on my way to Uni, but one day I stumbled upon the river-front entrance and was amazed a this beautiful park. You could spend hours exploring. Be sure to look up into the trees for flying foxes!
