Hartz Mountains National Park, Tasmania

#23 of 83 in Nature in Tasmania
A spectacularly rocky, craggy expanse of land in the southern reaches of Tasmania, Hartz Mountains National Park has the power to enchant with its almost otherworldly appearance. The area boasts richness in plant and animal life, with the park’s lush vegetation--mostly eucalypt forest and rainforest--serving as home to indigenous species like wallabies, possums, echidnas, and platypuses. Named after the Harz Mountains in Germany, the area was made a National Park in 1939. • Even though it was a cold day (Fathers Day) and there was some snow about it was a good trip. The road is not too bad although a bit slippery in places, so take care. It was good to go to the barbecue...  more »
  • Worth the visit even though the gravel track seems to be quite long! YOu can get some cracking photographs from the various lookouts at Hartz Mountain Nation Park! Would definitely recommend!  more »
  • We only did the smaller walks so far but are intending to get to the top one day. What a different world it is up there, fauna is amazing, lakes great, all up a magic place indeed :)  more »

  • Excellent facilities and we'll kept trails. We were going to do Hartz Peak but shortened it to the Esperance lake trail due to inclement weather. The water was gushing down the trail but all the low spots had built up wooden platforms so we didn't submerge our feet. Excellent toilets and a water supply at the trailhead. It made for a great shelter to sit out some heavy rain as we made some hot soup to warm up before heading out on the we'll kept gravel road.
  • What a magnificent area, it has its own climate😎😉
  • Awesome place to go. Really good walks
  • Beautiful scenery & views.
  • Beautiful landscape, good facilities, amazing views from the Hartz Peak.
