The Gap Park, Sydney

4.7
#2 of 14 in Nature in Sydney
Warm yellow-colored sheer cliffs and crashing waves dominate the view from The Gap Park. Walk along the scenic cliff top and enjoy the views of Tasman Sea and ships leaving Sydney Harbour. Notice the water dragons hiding among the granite rocks and Pacific Gulls, which use the area as nesting site. Go for a fish meal at a local restaurant, perhaps even one were Alfred Hitchcock was a patron during his visit in 1960s. A great place to get great views of Sydney sea line, without travelling too far. Unfortunately this picturesque location is also one of the top 10 popular suicide points on Earth. Around 2500 people commit suicide in Australia each year. Don Ritchie, a local who lived just 50 meters from the cliff and passed away in 2012, used to approach people contemplating suicide with a smile and kindness and saved up to 160 lives. He used to invite these people for tea or coffee and saved lives. Awarded Order of Australia, there is also a park in the area named after Don Ritchie.

Where to stay in Sydney

Sydney offers visitors hundreds of lodging options in its central area, with choices suitable for most budgets. As expected in a major tourist destination, harbor views play a major role in determining room prices. Expect to pay more for ocean-view suites, especially if you visit at the peak of the tourist season or around big city events. If you don't need to stay in the center of Sydney, consider budget-friendly hotels near the airport, or look for smaller roadside motels in the city's South West neighborhood.
