Queen Victoria Building, Sydney

Queen Victoria Building offers an architectural delight: an extravagantly detailed shopping center from Australia's late colonial period amidst the gleaming modernity of downtown Sydney's skyscrapers. From the outside, admire the Romanesque Revival facade that American architect Henry Hobson Richardson employed throughout the city in the last decade of the 19th century. Observe the large copper-sheathed central dome, cupolas on the corners of the roof, and columns all along the exterior walls. Inside, see stained-glass windows, arched skylights by the central dome, colonnades, and balustrades. And the shopping isn't half-bad in here either. • QVB is a shopper's delight with a huge range of shops selling clothes, handbags, antique maps, antique jewellery, etc. The lower levels have a huge range of foods to go. Perfect for a rainy day too.  more »
  • We went on an interesting tour of the building at 1130am Monday; well worth it. Plenty of information given about the building. I would recommend spending 15$ on the tour, although you can take in the...  more »

  • Lovely quaint shopping mall with a nice mix of boutique shops along with popular brands. It is completely indoors and it's not too large so a great place to stroll through. The building itself also has a lot of character and history both inside and outside. One of Sydney's best. Connected to Town Hall railway station.
  • Lovely building and just as nice inside. Everything is very expensive inside. The high tea is excellent though. Delicious food, friendly staff and very accommodating. I thought it was worth the price.
  • Amazing architecture and very well maintained. I love walking around the building and looking at old European architecture. There are plenty of shops to choose from and has an easy access to the Town Hall Station. Sometimes there are artists drawing in the front of the entrance, which gives the mall a lively feeling.
  • Overall: High-end and pricey clothing and food. Food-wise: Definitely paying for the ambiance! Try the high-tea on level 3! Make a booking and sit back and enjoy the tea. Dessert was not great. Others: Visit the quirky knick-knack hobby shop on level 2. It's pretty cool if you are into model airplanes and figures!
  • Period elegance. Large novelty clocks perform at various times. Plenty of places to eat or have coffee (slightly pricey as you might expect in this setting. A number of specialist shops such as one selling historic maps and charts. Easy access to Town Hall station.

Where to stay in Sydney

Sydney offers visitors hundreds of lodging options in its central area, with choices suitable for most budgets. As expected in a major tourist destination, harbor views play a major role in determining room prices. Expect to pay more for ocean-view suites, especially if you visit at the peak of the tourist season or around big city events. If you don't need to stay in the center of Sydney, consider budget-friendly hotels near the airport, or look for smaller roadside motels in the city's South West neighborhood.
