Parliament House, Sydney

3.5
#32 of 79 in Sightseeing in Sydney
Government Building Tourist Spot
Discover the capital city’s rich history at the iconic Parliament House. This complex of landmark buildings includes a two-level Georgian-style building, the oldest public building in the city, and two Neo-Gothic additions containing the parliamentary chambers. The oldest part of the complex was first built to house a wing of a new city hospital, which was largely financed by a monopoly on rum imports (prompting the locals to call it the "Rum Hospital") and completed in 1816. Massively rebuilt in the 1980s, several of the main building’s interior chambers were restored to their original appearance from the 19th century. Time your visit for one of the site’s regular Open Days, when visitors are allowed to wander freely through its many hallways and chambers. Where to stay in Sydney

Sydney offers visitors hundreds of lodging options in its central area, with choices suitable for most budgets. As expected in a major tourist destination, harbor views play a major role in determining room prices. Expect to pay more for ocean-view suites, especially if you visit at the peak of the tourist season or around big city events. If you don't need to stay in the center of Sydney, consider budget-friendly hotels near the airport, or look for smaller roadside motels in the city's South West neighborhood.
