Government House, Sydney

4.4
Become one of nearly 10,000 annual visitors attending cultural events held at iconic Government House. This busy city landmark, serving as the official residence of the governor of New South Wales, was constructed between 1837 and 1843 of stone, cedar, and marble. Designed by the prominent royal architect Edward Blore, who also worked on the plans for London’s Buckingham Palace, the building overlooks Sydney Harbor and includes a large garden area, which is open to the public. Make this historic site, featuring oil portraits and coats of arms from its past occupants, a mandatory stop on your tour of the city. • The visit is interesting above all from the historical point of view. E.g., discover details that not only is there a Australia Governor-General appointed by the Queen of England, but that each State has its own Governor. In fact, this is the House of the Governor of new South Wales. It is surrounded by a beautiful park. Remember that to enter you have to take the passport if you are a foreigner, it is an essential requirement

  • Very few of tourist would actually visit. However, it is really awesome building structure. Is a must visit location.
  • Interesting and not too crowded, since it's kind of hidden in the botanic garden and overshadowed by the nearby Opera House. But if you have time, go ahead and check it out. (Guided tours only, starting every half an hour)
  • The house tour was closed when I got here, but what a beautiful, pre-Victorian (?)neo Gothic (?) structure
  • Free and only guided entry. A totally memorable experience to visit this castle.
  • The guided tour was really interesting and well worth doing

Where to stay in Sydney

Sydney offers visitors hundreds of lodging options in its central area, with choices suitable for most budgets. As expected in a major tourist destination, harbor views play a major role in determining room prices. Expect to pay more for ocean-view suites, especially if you visit at the peak of the tourist season or around big city events. If you don't need to stay in the center of Sydney, consider budget-friendly hotels near the airport, or look for smaller roadside motels in the city's South West neighborhood.
