Become one of nearly 10,000 annual visitors attending cultural events held at iconic Government House. This busy city landmark, serving as the official residence of the governor of New South Wales, was constructed between 1837 and 1843 of stone, cedar, and marble. Designed by the prominent royal architect Edward Blore, who also worked on the plans for London’s Buckingham Palace, the building overlooks Sydney Harbor and includes a large garden area, which is open to the public. Make this historic site, featuring oil portraits and coats of arms from its past occupants, a mandatory stop on your tour of the city. Our Sydney holiday planner makes visiting Government House and other Sydney attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Historical early mansion with interesting gardens - check opening hours - it may close earlier than you expect - it's a lovely place to linger - kids love to play on the lawn under the big tree - maybe even bring a picnic bag and enjoy a few hours! It also makes a lovely stop on a stroll from Circular Quay past the Opera house around Farm Cove through the Botanic Gardens
  • Got a (Free!) tour, and ended up being just me and a friend. Our guide Jan was brilliant, she was so informative, friendly and clearly really knew what she was talking about. The house itself is great, especially the chandeliers, and the exit to the garden was a nice touch. Would have a cheeky nandos with Jan
  • This house/little castle is a hidden jem in Botanic Gardens! It's definitely worth checking and you'll love it! It's open every day and admission is free! Tours start every half an hour and the guides there are the best!
  • Beautiful old statehouse, loved the period decor and the exotic garden plants!
  • Beautiful Sydney landmark. Our hosts (His Excellency and Mrs Hurley) welcomed us enthusiastically.
