Coogee Beach, Sydney

4.6
#3 of 23 in Beaches in Sydney
Second only to Bondi in popularity, Coogee Beach is suitable for swimming, relaxing in the sun, and picnicking. Nearby is a busy shopping and dining area, where you can also find hotel accommodations if you choose to stay longer in this quaint part of the city. Though this part of the coast is famous for its dangerous shore breaks, an ocean pool lies at the southern end of the beach in a sheltered area safe for swimming. Lifeguards are on duty daily and on the Wedding Cake Island, rising out of the water about 400 m (1,300 ft) offshore. This small island forms a rocky reef that helps shelter the beach and creates an area safe for swimming Add Coogee Beach and other attractions to your Sydney trip itinerary using our Sydney trip builder.

Smaller and less crowded than the famous Bondi Beach. Great spot for picnics. Family friendly, very relaxing.  more »

Caution when changing clothes in the locker room. My shorts "disappeared" while I went to the urinal. The area features a nice Park where you can lie back, read and chat.

Coogee is absolutely one of my favorite beaches in Sydney. Such beautiful views, you can walk up to the overlook on the side, to the baths, and apparently there is some excellent snorkeling over there...  more »

Love this beach. Can get crowded. There are backpackers everywhere and tourists but it's fun because you get to learn about them. Beach itself is beautiful. Doesn't get hit too hard with seaweed. Perfect to sit and chill out at.

Beautiful beach with pram access to get to the sand and there is some nice cafes and restaurants.

Where to stay in Sydney

Sydney offers visitors hundreds of lodging options in its central area, with choices suitable for most budgets. As expected in a major tourist destination, harbor views play a major role in determining room prices. Expect to pay more for ocean-view suites, especially if you visit at the peak of the tourist season or around big city events. If you don't need to stay in the center of Sydney, consider budget-friendly hotels near the airport, or look for smaller roadside motels in the city's South West neighborhood.
