Sydney’s best kept secretMake Brett Whiteley Studio part of your personalized Sydney itinerary using our Sydney online route builder.
The Brett Whiteley Studio was the workplace and home of Australian artist, Brett Whiteley (1939–92).
The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985 and converted it into a studio and exhibition space. He lived there from 1987 to 1992, the year he died in Thirroul.
The visitor is offered the unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the space – the studio with his unfinished paintings, art equipment and collections of reference books, and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images.
The living area has memorabilia such as photographs, objects, postcards, furniture, his music collection and sketchbooks. The gallery has changing exhibitions of the artist’s works: paintings, drawings, sculpture and graphics borrowed from the Brett Whiteley Studio Collection, Art Gallery of New South Wales and private collections.
There is a small gallery shop with postcards, posters and other merchandise for sale. There is no cafe at the Studio, however visitors are welcome to return on the day after visiting the numerous cafes and restaurants close by.

Tucked away in a quite Surry Hills back street not far from the CBD is this remarkable gallery/studio in a old warehouse. Such a wonderful glimpse at the life of the genius that is Brett W. So good.

If you're a Brett Whiteley fan, as I am, you'll enjoy this space. You're not allowed to take photos, which is disappointing. There is a tiny selection of books, postcards, posters and cards. Which predictably include none of what is on display, so you can't have a memento of your favourite paintings. But these are minor irritants. Whiteley was a genius and to be in his work space and in the presence of so much of his work is an honour and a pleasure.

We only had time for a brief visit today but it was so interesting. We will be back for an in-depth look.
-
Really cool studio packed with so much history about an amazing artist unfortunately Alchamy had been taken down to save if from rain damage but still an awesome place, would recommend visiting in conjunction with Wendy's(his widow) Secret Garden

Still closed but hopefully soon it will be open. Then why not visit the studio of one of Australia's most inferential and culturally white artist. Brett had a unique way of seeing our world. I think he was fantastic. As an angle variant of an Australian myself I feel that he represents a part of our history that is no longer in favour.

The upstairs gallery is kept in a similar state when Brett used it as his living space and studio.
