  • The koala hospital is a must see at port Macquarie. Home to resident injured koalas who cannot be released for their own safety. And rehab/ hospital for sick and injured others. The love and dedicatio...  more »
  • To have the chance to see koalas up close was amazing. We have seen a few in the wild but it was lovely to see them sleeping and eating only meters away. There is no handling the animals, but it’s bet...  more »
  • I am an animal lover and enjoyed seeing all the Koalas who seemed to be quite happy in their enclosures. They are kept there for their wellbeing unlike some zoos who just keep animals for the public. ...  more »

  • Free, interesting. Tour is great but does not suit small children. Tour is really for adults only as the information they give is really over the heads of small children. The Koala-seum is great, very interactive. Best to take children any time except to the tour at 3pm as a lot of the kids that were there got very bored, there is a lot of standing around learning about koalas and only a few koalas visible which we saw for a couple of short periods during the overall tour. Kids would find it much more enjoyable to view in their own time :)
  • My favourite thing in Port Macquarie. We travelled up the East Coast and this is one of the few "touristy" things we did. The 3pm guided talk was really informative and I adored seeing these beautiful little guys get their medicine and some lovely leaves to eat. You don't pay to go on the talk but it was so enjoyable I ended up spending $35 in the gift shop. Worth a visit.
  • Quite possibly the cutest place I've ever been. The wonderful staff helps to nurse injured koalas back to health. They are adorable and definitely get TLC. Make sure to give the animals their space and don't expect to pet or hold the koalas.
  • Great experience. Helpful volunteers, good access. Feeding at 15:00 is the most interesting. But it's a hospital in a nature environment, not a petting zoo.
  • Great Centre that helps rehabilitate and nurse Koalas to health whilst providing a place for locals and tourists to be able to safely view Koalas

Where to stay in Port Macquarie

As a well-established holiday destination, Port Macquarie offers a good number of places to stay. Most accommodations cluster in the town's scenic areas--at the mouth of the Hastings River and along the coast, as well as close to the beaches. While the town does feature several larger hotels, rental apartments and guesthouses outnumber them by far. If you're looking to stay outside town and closer to the lush surrounding countryside, you can choose anything from luxurious cabins to campgrounds.
