Port Arthur Historic Site, Port Arthur

4.5
#1 of 90 in Museums in Tasmania
There are few better places to learn about Australia's penal-colony heritage than the Port Arthur Historic Site on the southeastern coast of Tasmania. Once a prison for Britain's hardest criminals, the complex's remains now serve as an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the prison's grim purpose, it offers a scenic setting on the water surrounded by densely forested hills. Take a walking tour to learn about the prison's history, dine at Felon's Bistro, and then conduct a paranormal investigation with ghost-hunting equipment late at night. • It had been a long, long time since I explored Port Arthur. We made our way down to the Historic Site and were amazed at the effort that has gone into maintaining this place. The staff here are terrific and are very knowledgeable. There is plenty to do and see. We wandered around here for a good five hours and never once felt fatigued because there was always something new to see. Make sure to follow one of the free tour guides; it adds a completely new element to the experience if you can understand the history and importance of it all. Here's a good tip: wear comfortable shoes!
  • I am not a history buff but really enjoyed my time here at Port Arthur. The stories were both captivating and touched my heart. We were transported back in time and made to appreciate the difficult times experienced here. Included in the price was a mini cruise which was nice. Our guide was informative and funny. A great day and recommended.
  • Had a ball over two days here. The historic site is well run. The boat trip is well worth the time. The ruins are interesting and the houses are really fun filled with artifacts and cool recordings. The fire places in the old prisons where a warm welcome on a cold day to. I was impressed by the tasteful massacre memorial. Which is a place for quiet remembrance. I will definitely return to explore some more.
  • This location has a tragic history but it's worth a visit. It has been well maintained and has all amenities of a tourist spot. The boat ride is fun for the kids. They also have night tours of the ruins. The drive to port Arthur is beautiful and has a few lookout spots.
  • Had a great day. Informative and helpful guides. The information signs were plentiful and well written. The Shop staff knew their stuff. It was interesting that no one mentioned the shooting that occurred their and their was only one sign pointing the way. But to me that is a much a part of Port Arthur now as the convict history
