Port Arthur Historic Site, Port Arthur

4.5
#1 of 87 in Museums in Tasmania
There are few better places to learn about Australia's penal-colony heritage than the Port Arthur Historic Site on the southeastern coast of Tasmania. Once a prison for Britain's hardest criminals, the complex's remains now serve as an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the prison's grim purpose, it offers a scenic setting on the water surrounded by densely forested hills. Take a walking tour to learn about the prison's history, dine at Felon's Bistro, and then conduct a paranormal investigation with ghost-hunting equipment late at night. • It's a big place, but it's not good. There are many points of view, slowly take a look at a few hours, you can take a boat to the island, but only a designated time of the shift, the wrong is not the way.

  • A must see if you are visiting Tasmania. There is so much history here and easy to spend hours walking around the site reading the stories. You can also do a guided tour to get a more entertaining experience of the grounds. We booked a night time ghost tour 👻 which I highly recommend. It's quite creepy to walk around in the dark with only lanterns for light. Our guide was an American guide named Andrew who made the experience very entertaining with his enthusiasm and humour while still telling some spooky tales and giving some scares. The ghost tour is good because they don't rely on phony props and cheap scare tactics and let the stories stand on their own.
  • A must for anyone visiting Tasmania. There's an eerie and mysteric atmosphere about the place. Beautiful surroundings and backdrop. The ruins and the grounds are very well kept. There are a number of tours including a cruise around the harbour. Very informative tour guides. The best part of Tasmania...
  • Great preservation of the colonial history of Tasmania. The boat and guided tour ends at 3pm though which was quite a bummer. However you can always wander around the location at your leisure. It takes about an hour. The food in the cafe is just brilliant!
  • A must visit, very interesting place to learn about. Good start with a guided walking tour with a very informative guide. The grounds are well maintained and great to see the old buildings and learn about the history. Would recommend staying for the ghost tour, guide again was informative but also made it a thoroughly enjoyable night.
  • This fantastic historic site would be worth visiting for many, but the fact that it's in such a beautiful place makes it worth visiting for everyone. It's well worth signing up for the tour which includes a harbor cruise (with some great views). There's a beautiful forested coastal trail between the site and the nearby resort whose restaurant would be a good alternative spot for lunch. Note for land travelers: It's worth looking up the cruise ship schedules and avoiding the Penitentiary on those days as it will be crowded.
