Port Arthur Historic Site, Port Arthur

#1 of 94 in Museums in Tasmania
There are few better places to learn about Australia's penal-colony heritage than the Port Arthur Historic Site on the southeastern coast of Tasmania. Once a prison for Britain's hardest criminals, the complex's remains now serve as an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the prison's grim purpose, it offers a scenic setting on the water surrounded by densely forested hills. Take a walking tour to learn about the prison's history, dine at Felon's Bistro, and then conduct a paranormal investigation with ghost-hunting equipment late at night. • Wonderful heritage site, rich in history. Tour guides are highly skilled and experienced. The tours we went on were very informative and there was plenty to see. Interactive displays and lessons for children were a highlight. Food was delicious and the visitor centre was c l wan and tidy. Toilet facilities were clean and wheelchair access is available.
  • An amazing and fantastic site! A must do trip when you are in Hobart. Make sure you take note of the ferry ride time, tour time schedule etc as walking from one point to another takes literally 15 to 20 minutes as the site is HUGE! You don’t wanna miss the boat! The drive to Port Arthur also offer some nice views! The nature, animals ,the sky etc. It took me about 1.5 to 2 hours to get there. Easy drive. I would recommend bring some food and drinks along. There are two cafes at the visitor centre. It wasn't up to my taste and it is a bit pricey. Why not bring your picnic basket if you are planning to spend a day there!
  • I've been visiting the Port Arthur historic site for 40 years and the work they do, particularly recent improvements, are simply marvellous. The interpretative signs and renovated houses etc. are terrific, but this visit I went on the tour that is included in the entry fee and I was most impressed. It was most professionally done, it was informative and presented in what I think of as a mature way. I came away knowing more about Port Arthur and also the colonial history of Tasmania.
  • Definitely a must do when visiting Hobart! The drive up is gorgeous, the grounds are immaculate, and it is educational and unique. The boat ride was also fun. Wear warm clothes and walking shoes and bring a raincoat! It is worth spending a few hours here. Your ticket is also valid for two days in case you don't have time!
  • This was a great place to visit. The history was interesting, the site was beautiful and the ghost tour was entertaining. I don't believe in ghost, my partner does. Irrelevant to the review, but I just like to share little bits about who I am. I'll go back one day.
