#2 of 9 in Zoos & Aquariums in South Australia
Monarto Zoo is the largest open-range zoo in the world spanning more than 1,000 hectares of fauna and flora and the only zoological park to be completely power neutral.

Owned and operated by Zoos South Australia Monarto Zoo opened in 1983 as a closed special purpose breeding facility. After officially opening to the public in October 1993, Monarto Zoo has evolved into a true biopark representing a unique blend of a conservation and zoological park. Its principle purpose is to provide a place for the conservation of Australian and exotic wildlife, public recreation and education.

Monarto Zoo is located 45 minutes (70 kilometres) from South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, and is the gateway to the picturesque Murraylands region. The zoo is open every day of the year from 9:30am to 5:00pm and focuses on African and Australian animals. The zoology and botany of these continents is reflected in the zoo’s major exhibits; Chimpanzee, Cheetah, African Painted Dog and Lion viewing platforms, Southern White Rhinoceros Boma viewing area, African Waterhole viewing platform and Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby walk-through exhibit.

  • Fantastic day. Easy to get around either part walking and then a bus or in the bus. Get there for the keeper talks for different animal, this makes the experience that much better. Great seeing the larger groups of individual species and how they interact with each other. The zoo is doing fantastic conservation/breeding work. So enjoyed today with 6mth old, 2 1/2 yr old, and three adults. Wonderful, informative volunteers made the day really special. Thank we'll be back.
  • Great day, though the hot summer weather has taken its toll on the landscape. The gorilla enclosure was really good, the African section with the giraffes is my favourite and the new lion viewing enclosure, where the humans are caged, is great. The baby rhino was delightful. Well done to Monarto for their work in animal conservation.
  • We arrived around 12pm on a Saturday during the school holidays so there was a bit of a line up at the gates but they had both booths open so the line went quickly. Due to it being popular we did have to park a bit further away from the information center but it wasn't a hassle. We waited for the bus and hopped on our tour guide and bus driver were lovely and were very knowledgeable. I love that we get to go through all the enclosures and that they explain everything we pass along the way. We stayed on the bus for the whole trip and were fortunate enough to not have to switch busses to see the carnivores. We stopped off at the Giraffe enclosure on the way back and got to have a look at them along with the Tasmanian Devils up close. We also enjoyed the short walk to the Chimpanzee enclosure where it was feeding time and had a nice walk through the Yellow Footed Wallabies on the way back. Overall a fantastic day and will definitely be visiting again!
  • Great set up. As zoo members entry price wasnt a consideration. All staff and volunteers were lovely. It was a warm day and we were disappointed no water fountains available to top up drink bottles. Good picnic areas and playground.
  • My husband and I LOVED Monarto Zoo! We had a few of the animal experiences booked for the day which we thought were AMAZING! We can't wait to go back.
