Carrick Hill, Mitcham

4.6
#2 of 32 in Historic Sites in South Australia
Historic Site Tourist Spot
See a large collection of drawings, sculptures, antiques, and paintings at historic Carrick Hill, which once served as home to Sir Edward Hayward, a prominent local businessman. Designed to resemble an English manor, the house was completed in 1939. Today, the property is one of few such period sites in Australia to have survived virtually unchanged and with most of its original furnishings still in place. Original owners fitted the house with an impressive inner staircase, which they brought all the way from Europe, where they spent a year-long honeymoon. Today, the property hosts regular themed art and social history exhibitions, as well as other cultural events. • We had a lovely girls day out there today. The food is absolutely beautiful and our waiter for the day was George and he was amazing, very friendly and made the whole experience fun and enjoyable. After lunch we had a leisurely walk around the gardens. Great place. Will definitely be back
  • We love this place, the gardens are beautiful and the food is always top notch. The staff are always super friendly and it is a great place to eat with kids as there is loads of room in the cafe and highchairs. We have been to the storybook walk a couple of times and while it is really sweet it could do with a bit of maintenance.
  • Beautiful house and gardens. We try to get here at least twice a year. Wonderful hidden treasure 🌳🌹🌼☕🍰
  • Outside is all open to the public. Absolutely beautiful. Story trail to walk along with the kids is fantastic.
  • Gardens are relaxing. The actual Building is stunning

Where to stay in Adelaide

Most budget-friendly rooms in Adelaide cluster in the central business district, with plenty of backpacker accommodations located near the city's central bus station. Adelaide also boasts an outstanding public transport system, which makes staying outside the central areas a viable and economical option for sightseers. Look for quiet and affordable rooms in North Adelaide, a leafy neighborhood filled with an eclectic mix of shopping and dining options. Book early for visits during peak season, and expect higher prices on the weekends and during school holidays.
