Carrick Hill, Mitcham
Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
See a large collection of drawings, sculptures, antiques, and paintings at historic Carrick Hill, which once served as home to Sir Edward Hayward, a prominent local businessman. Designed to resemble an English manor, the house was completed in 1939. Today, the property is one of few such period sites in Australia to have survived virtually unchanged and with most of its original furnishings still in place. Original owners fitted the house with an impressive inner staircase, which they brought all the way from Europe, where they spent a year-long honeymoon. Today, the property hosts regular themed art and social history exhibitions, as well as other cultural events.
