Yarra Park is part of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct, the premier sporting precinct of Victoria, Australia. Located in Yarra Park is the Melbourne Cricket Ground and numerous sporting fields and ovals, including the associated sporting complexes of Melbourne & Olympic Parks. The park and sporting facilities are located in the inner-suburb of East Melbourne. In the late 1850s, many of the earliest games of Australian rules football were played at Yarra Park, which was known at the time as the Richmond Paddock.
Tree-lined paths run parallel to Punt Road and Swan Street, and criss-cross the park. Some of the lawns are used for parking for sporting events. Three footbridges allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the railway lines to the different sporting venues and easy access to the Yarra River Trail.
Around the MCG are sculptures of Australian sporting heroes including: Australian rules footballers Ron Barassi and Dick Reynolds; cricketers Sir Donald Bradman and Keith Miller; athletics "golden girl" Betty Cuthbert. Nearby is an old eucalyptus scar tree which shows a big scar caused by harvesting of bark for a canoe by the original inhabitants of the Yarra River Valley, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation.

  • Large parkland area containing the iconic MCG and Richmond football ground. Ideal for walking the dog or playing on the grass. Close to Richmond and Jolimont stations.  more »

  • Great place to park for the Australian Open, as well as letting the kids have a run around after arriving and before going home. It's nice and close to the city without being too loud. Would have killed for a public toilet to be open, though...
  • The best fireworks display of my life (9.30pm show). It was literally in your face and was somewhat touching.
  • Finished the Melbourne marathon here......well, not so much the marathon, but part of the marathon festival. We did the 5k run as more of a walk with the kids. Very cool experience and a lot of fun to see the MCG up close at a non ball sport event.
  • Family fireworks at 9.3o for New Year's Eve was great!
  • Best place to watch the kids fireworks at nine pm on New year's Eve. Park around Richmond and it's as gentle walk down to the park for the fireworks. Bring a picnic blanket, picnic basket full of food and soft drink and enjoy the kids fireworks. Stay high near bridge road since they are fired into the sky
