The old Treasury building is just down from Parliament Buildings in Spring Street and has a view down Collins Street. It is a free museum of the history of Victoria and the Gold Rush in particular. It...  more »

The Old Treasury Building was briefly mentioned when I passed by on a tour bus. I made a mental note to come back later. Good decision. Spent more than 2 hours at this free museum. The gold vaults and...  more »

This free museum is an excellent visit! You'll learn about the gold trade (tell your kids it's about where the gold came after Sovereign Hill), and other interesting history displays. Awesome panorama of Melbourne then and now. The caretaker's apartment is on display too. Eight children raised in that tiny spot. And there's a display of Real Gold. I'm sure it was real. Anyway, check the opening days, they're a bit eccentric.

I only had time for a quick visit but there's a lot of cool information and displays to look at. The staff were really welcoming, friendly and helpful when I walked in the door. I thought there might be a bit more to the gold vaults than what was there but overall it was still a great experience.

Had a meeting here the other day, used the wheelchair entry (the back door). Been picked up by the staff, but couldn't get out by ourselves without a staff card…good security… The building is old and heavy like a castle, was once home to the Treasury Department of the Government of Victoria, but is now a museum of Melbourne history.

This well maintained historic Melbourne building has interesting exhibitions catering to all age groups of locals and overseas visitors. It is serviced by knowledgeable volunteers. Visits are free of charge but donations appreciated.

A beautiful historic building. Formerly the state treasury. Many happy memories for people who have been married in the registry when it was housed here.

Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.
