South Melbourne Market, Melbourne

4.6
#4 of 35 in Shopping in Melbourne
The maze of specialty shops set up in Victorian-style, wood-and-red-brick building where South Melbourne Market resides offers everything from fruits to silver jewelry. Open since 1867, the market is Melbourne's longest-running one. Among the many stalls, you'll find fresh produce, internatioal cuisine such as dim sum and Turkish gozleme, gifts, housewares, and men's and women's fashions. You can also learn recipes and techniques in cooking classes that Melbourne chefs regularly host here. Markets all tend to blur into each other nowadays but this one stands out as it had a great mix of stores and some really fabulous local produce. If I lived in Melbourne, I'd be here all the time!  more »

'nuff said. The oysters and the sea urchins are enough reason to visit. However, the coffee and the french pastries are also really good.  more »

smaller, less crowded, less varieties compared to QVM. worth a visit if you are nearby that area. and by the way, there is a Woolworths supermarket a minute walk away if you need to get more stuffs  more »

  • Great place to buy local produce and other products. It has a good vibe with lots of interesting things to browse and buy. South Melbourne market is a Melbourne institution with great history. Easy to get to, with the local Light Rail / Trams very close by.
  • Along with your being able to buy almost anything it's got a great vibe, a delicious array of foods (both cooked and uncooked) and available parking. It's also a lovely place to take tourists to see. We'll return the often.
  • One of the best Markets in Melbourne. Loads of food, fruits, fish and veges. Taking tourists here instead of Queen Victoria markets would be a better and more interesting option!
  • One of the better places to pick up extremely spicy, shaved, paper thin salami... =××× Perfect with a glass of sweet rose in summer, but don't try if you can't handle the heat.
  • A Melbourne institution, the Dim Sims are famous and synonymous with authentic flavour. The price of produce is a little higher but the quality is there so worth the extra money spent. Parking can be right so get in early or use PT.

Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.
