South Melbourne Market, Melbourne

4.5
The maze of specialty shops set up in Victorian-style, wood-and-red-brick building where South Melbourne Market resides offers everything from fruits to silver jewelry. Open since 1867, the market is Melbourne's longest-running one. Among the many stalls, you'll find fresh produce, internatioal cuisine such as dim sum and Turkish gozleme, gifts, housewares, and men's and women's fashions. You can also learn recipes and techniques in cooking classes that Melbourne chefs regularly host here. • Rather small market with very basic fruit and vegetables. Nothing like the markets in Europe. It's not worth the bother.  more »

  • Great market for locals and tourists alike. I love going here for my weekly grocery shop. Lots of variety in terms of products & stalls. Good coffee and food options. They host a lot of cool food trucks too from time to time. Easily accessible on the 96 tram.
  • I absolutely love this market, and I almost prefer it over the Queen Victoria Markets. The market itself is much, much smaller than Victoria Markets and has a lot less variety, but what I love is that it feels much more personal, local, and a lot of the shops feel less touristy and more authentic with quality products. The food and meats itself are basically all the same whether you're at Victoria markets or South Melbourne markets, but the environment is definitely less touristy at South Melbourne Markets. Additionally, I have yet to get through a lot of the food stalls, but from looking, the food options seem higher quality than the food court in Victoria Markets.
  • This is one of Metro Melbourne's better markets. Have been coming here for years now. Aside from fresh produce, they also offer everyday stuff that one needs. Almost all shops here are pretty well-stocked and sellers are friendly. Maybe someone could enlighten me about the reasoning behind opening on Wednesdays, closing on Thursdays and then opening again for the rest of the week. Why bother closing on Thursdays when most shops have already bothered preparing and opening on Wednesdays? Thanks in advance!
  • Together with the Queen Victoria market, the South Melbourne Market is a must visit destination for visitors. Enjoy the Fresh Oysters shucked whilst you wait, garnish with any of a wide variety of sauces. Great eating experience with loads of Aussie fare including the Hot Jam Donut truck. Buy some cheeses, sliced ham/meat from the deli, some nice crusty bread, find a spot and tuck in. Love it.
  • One of the best markets in Melbourne, with good cover for when the weather turns. Exceptional options to either graze or dine in both within the market and the periphery. Weeknights there are occasionally cool events such as a Jazz night on Thursday evenings in the summer.
