Spend a few hours wandering the myriad stalls at Queen Victoria Market, the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Originating as a small market east of the city in the 1850s, the market today covers seven hectares (17 acres) in the Melbourne Central Business District. Shop for a variety of food, clothing, shoes, jewelry, and crafts. Make sure you try a hot doughnut from the van that's been operating here for more than 50 years. • When I’m Melbourne, we take a trip to the market to get the freshly made warm jam filled donuts, have a walk around and plan the rest of the day. Free to get in. People are lovely and looks like a won...  more »

  • I spent a couple mornings here just browsing before finally settling on some basic souvenirs and some handmade souvenirs as well. The best part about this whole market though, might just be the jelly-filled donuts from the donut truck located on the small street that separates the food part of the market from the "souvenir" part of the market. Made fresh, and so tasty - they are the real attraction, everything else is just secondary!
  • A very casual Sunday lazy afternoon spent here... Stroll the markets to check out for the freshest produce or some cured meats and cheeses ... Once done through the market... Stroll through the numerous Cafe's or food stalls which fancy your taste buds along with a chilled bear while listening to some of the local artists playing and as you watch the world go by....
  • Not really a place for locals, but if you are a tourist or feeling tourist-y, there is lots to see and buy. As well as quite a few good places to grab a bite. That said, it's good for a cheap gawk. Pretty much everything there is rather expensive, though there is fresh produce. Well as fresh as it gets when it's a good ninety minutes to the nearest farm.
  • Love this market both as a local shopping spot and for bringing out-of-town visitors. The highlight of this market is definitely the fresh meat, seafood and produce sections. There are also often different events going on such as cheese festivals, book festivals, ice skating, etc. I could probably go without visiting the other shopping areas but a good place for tourists to pick up souvenirs.
  • Way too many good deli's to choose from. Such fabulous foods. Something for everyone. The other stalls in the clothing etc area were few and far between on the Friday we were there. I guess it's mostly a weekend thing.
