Hosier Lane, Melbourne

4.3
#5 of 60 in Sightseeing in Melbourne
Landmark Tourist Spot
Mosey down Hosier Lane to see some of Australia's finest street art. Graffiti falls short as a term for describing most of the graphics adorning the building walls. The artists intend for their elaborate works to provoke thought the same way art in more traditional media does. Like many formal art galleries and museums, the works along the street constantly change as artists create new pieces. After viewing the street gallery, pop into one of the nearby upscale cocktail lounges for a refreshment. Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.

  • A continually changing street canvas of art covers the length of Hosier Lane. Wonderful to see such an extensive collection by local artists displayed. Don't miss AC/DC Lane also!  more »
  • Hosier Lane is not very big but it is big in terms of a destination in the Melbourne CBD to view graffiti street art. Some of it is really good although if you are not a fan of street art then you may...  more »

  • Nice unusual little tourist attraction, ET was a highlight and so was the multi coloured hair girl.
  • Great place to start off your trek through the graffiti lanes of Melbourne. The art form, while temporary, will always instill emotion. 100% free and would check it out any time of the day. There are always people roaming around in the area checking out the art!
  • generally busy, but one of the best places to start if interested in the city's street art
  • Great lane in Melbourne with street art the main feature. Highly suggested
  • Hosier Lane and the many others in and around Melbourne are my must visits when in town - the graffiti changes most days and sometimes you see great street art slowly getting covered by lesser quality and I used to wonder why they let that happen. But now I get that's the nature of this art form - its like life; it's temporary. So, now I enjoy what's there - when I am there.
