Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is Australia's richest horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840.OverviewThe Flemington Racecourse site comprises 1.27 square kilometres of Crown land. The course was originally leased to the Victoria Turf Club in 1848, which merged with the Victoria Jockey Club in 1864 to form the Victoria Racing Club. The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861. In 1871 the Victoria Racing Club Act was passed, giving the VRC legal control over Flemington Racecourse. The racecourse is shaped not unlike a pear, and boasts a six-furlong (1,200 m) straight known as 'the Straight Six.' The track has a circumference of 2.312km and a final straight of 450m for race distances over 1.2km. Races are run in an anti-clockwise direction. The course has a crowd capacity of over 120,000 and contains three grandstands. The biggest ever attendance was on VRC Derby Day in 2006 when 129,089 people saw Efficient win the VRC Derby. The racecourse has undergone a facelift in recent years, with the opening of a new $45 million grandstand in 2000. It also contains a bronze statue of the famous racehorse Phar Lap, which was donated to the Club as part of Australia's bicentenary celebrations in 1988. The Hill Stand, built in 1977, houses the artist Harold Freedman's seven panel mural which traces the History of Racing. The work was commissioned to mark the Australian bicentenary in 1988.

  • For nearly 10 years now I've been lucky enough to attend at least 1 day of racing with my parents in the Panorama Room. Every year the food & atmosphere receive a passing grade, but the thing I like most us the convenience of having the TAB facilities at the back of the room. Patrons are able to eat, drink, bet and sit in the stands without having to walk more than 50 steps! 🐴👍
  • Majority of all the patrons are general access yet the facilities being upgraded are heavily leaning towards pleasing the high rollers. I would avoid and go anywhere else and watch the races from the TAB. Us and many others could not even see the course due to the horrific layout of general access. Drinks were hard to obtain also with all bars being packed. Painful. Please note this applied to the Melbourne cup carnival.
  • Flemington is beautiful with all the roses and well manicured lawns. During race season especially Melbourne Cup, there is so much that happens and so many different types of entry to the Cup. There are facilities for everyone and disabled parking is very good. Flemington is not just used for the races but a variety of of other events throughout the year and, it is located right next-door to the Royal Melbourne Show Grounds. The train stops outside the gates of Flemington race course and the show grounds from the city. It returns back to Flinders Street Station in the city and has connecting trains on all other lines. There is also trams to Flemington so transport should not be a problem. Flemington is being upgraded and has been upgraded and changed in some areas if only for the Melbourne Cup. I have found that you can take your own food into the races if you want and save on money. Make sure you dress to there dress code or you won't be allowed in. Have a fantastic time at Flemington!
  • Melbourne cup day - we had the cheap tickets. Which, honestly, worked out well. You kind of want to be in the muck and mayhem of thousands of well-dressed drunken fools, right? The food lines were a joke, but the food was pretty bad so it didn't really matter. Drinks were cheaper than I thought they would be, and also pretty good!
  • Melbourne cup race days are always great here. I've been in the Makybe Diva Marquee twice now and absolutely loved it. Great venue, great food and love the pamper room for the ladies. Thank you

Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.
