Federation Square, Melbourne

4.0
#4 of 31 in Museums in Melbourne
Specialty Museum Museum
More than a popular meeting spot in Melbourne, Federation Square serves as an entertainment destination in the heart of the city. Encompassing a city block, this plaza contains bars, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and plenty of shops. You can rent a bike here and ride around the city, or depart on a boat cruise from the nearby dock. Check out The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, holder of the world's biggest collection of Australian art. Of architectural note are the scalene-triangle sandstone building facades and ochre-colored sandstone blocks in the main square's paving. Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.

  • The place has a great vibe ! The architecture is so amazing ! I always go to federation square whenever I visit Melbourne.. it's a place to relax .. have a friendly chat .. coffee .. food ... It's got a diversity with which you can relate to ! I just love the place 💗
  • Great architecture and space. Nice and chilled place to hang with friends, and to watch sport on the large screen. Highly suggest watching the tennis here during the Australian Open and you haven't got tickets.
  • Ahhhhh... This is where you can see the beauty of Melbourne... good place to hangout with your GF and friends.. sometimes you can see free show from the local people. People are always enjoying here.
  • I'm drawn to Federation Square like a bee to flowers every time I'm in Melbourne. It's like an attraction precinct in itself - a hub for events, tourism, food and wine, and home to two major attractions, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and NGV Australia: Ian Potter Centre. It's the centre of FREE for visitors. There are lots of free things to do daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. You have free fitness classes, craft workshops, vintage car exhibitions, designer markets, cultural festivals, concerts, food fairs, open-air movies, dance parties, and the list goes on. It also a popular meeting place and gathering spot for locals. No one will lose their way trying to find this place.
  • Wonderful architecture and a great public space to hang out in. Lots of upscale restaurants around for those who fancy a bite to eat or a drink. Great free wifi to use.
