Federation Square, Melbourne

4.2
More than a popular meeting spot in Melbourne, Federation Square serves as an entertainment destination in the heart of the city. Encompassing a city block, this plaza contains bars, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and plenty of shops. You can rent a bike here and ride around the city, or depart on a boat cruise from the nearby dock. Check out The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, holder of the world's biggest collection of Australian art. Of architectural note are the scalene-triangle sandstone building facades and ochre-colored sandstone blocks in the main square's paving. • The memory is of 40 degrees in the shade, in the middle of the Australian summer, surrounded by children and families who were playing, a cold beer with my wife, a concert by an unknown group and free in the middle of the square and its futuristic buildings. Emblem of liveability in Melbourne.

  • I really don't get Federation Square. There doesn't seem much there other than a couple of museums. Not sure why it's worth visiting. Happy to understand. Flinders St Station, Swanston St and a few ot...  more »
  • An open space with some interesting building designs. Yes it has bars and restaurants around the square, but it then leaves me wondering what else?  more »

  • There are so many Arts exhibitions and things to see. It's an architecturally beautiful around this area with so much to see. It's definitely designed to attract tourists which it seems to do a good job of. Plenty of places to eat and drink around and easy to access via public transport.
  • Lots to like about Fed square. Perfect meeting place with heaps on offer for all age groups. National Gallery Victoria and ACME have free displays worth two hours of your attention. There is a great choice of food and drinks available. The Square comes alive with large numbers of people gathering to watch sports and cultural events on the big screen. Definitely a place that will leave great memories.
  • Melbourne Writers Festival at Deakin Edge. Wonderful to hear Tracy Chevalier and Hannah Kent discuss their work. The only faults were that the wooden seats were very hard, and although the glass permits wonderful views, it was also makes this venue very hot. I wouldn't want to be present at a function during summer
  • Cool little area to chill out in Melbourne always something to see! Would recommend it to anyone visiting Melbourne! Its also very close to everything including ACMI which always has something to do or see.
  • Very dumb! What a waste of such a great location and landmark. Instead of building this looking like human dry waste, ugly and ill, some nasty creature from hell, no elegance whatsoever, they could well have built a beautiful icon or symbol for Melbourne, right next to the Flinder St station. Such a terrible decision and event! This location could be the equivalent of Syd Opera House in Melbourne, but it is instead used for some brownie disgusting blocks of whatever. Or at least change it to vibrant cheerful colours like red, orange, white and green. Would look much better than grey and brown.

Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.
