Federation Square, Melbourne

4.2
More than a popular meeting spot in Melbourne, Federation Square serves as an entertainment destination in the heart of the city. Encompassing a city block, this plaza contains bars, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and plenty of shops. You can rent a bike here and ride around the city, or depart on a boat cruise from the nearby dock. Check out The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, holder of the world's biggest collection of Australian art. Of architectural note are the scalene-triangle sandstone building facades and ochre-colored sandstone blocks in the main square's paving. • As said this is a real central place to meet. A lot is happening here. Plenty of school kids during the school hours so avoid during lunch if you think they are too loud. Overall a nice area but not t...  more »

  • They built this place before the world was ready. People used to be aghast with the architectural imposition. Now it's loved and accepted. Like all the greats, you've got to break some rules. It's a great place to sit, rest, meet up with friends. All sorts of events are held here. It's a real piazza, albeit modern, it brings people to people.
  • Lovely public space. We went to the Polish Festival on Sunday, spent time looking at the different stalls and then walked along the river where all the traditional Polish food was. We spent the afternoon enjoying the different music performances at Deakin Edge Theatre. This is a really beautiful facility, with good acoustics and has a very intimate feel to it. It is also accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Bright. Good atmosphere. In and outdoor places to eat and relax. The National Gallery of Victoria is there. Great design.
  • There are so many Arts exhibitions and things to see. It's an architecturally beautiful around this area with so much to see. It's definitely designed to attract tourists which it seems to do a good job of. Plenty of places to eat and drink around and easy to access via public transport.
  • Lovely architecture and nice sit back in the heart of the city. Cafes, restaurants and hotels nearby are really expensive. Though nice ice creams outside Flinder's Railway station

Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.
