Department Store Shopping
Famous for its world-class customer service, David Jones is not only Australia’s oldest department store, but the oldest department store in the world still doing business under its original name. Located inside the Bourke Street Mall, the store occupies two floors and is divided into a number of departments, including ladies' fashion, menswear, shoes, beauty, children’s wear and toys, books, stationery, and small electrical goods. Drop by for some high-end shopping, and use the store’s convenient gift wrapping and personal shopping services. The site also includes a hair and beauty salon, and a men’s barbershop. End your day at the food hall, serving some of the finest gourmet dishes available in town. David Jones is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Melbourne Edition.

  • David Jones is in an ideal location on two sides of the Bourke Street and is an amazing store. It is easily the best department store in Australia and the Melbourne store hands down is a lot better th...  more »

  • Thank you to Anisu for all your help in getting me the perfect suit and arranging a hem shortening within the hour. Massive kudos to Benjamin who, 8 minutes before closing time, rushed over to my hotel to bring my new trousers to me, after I had left them at the store when I went to pick up my suit! To David Jones HQ: the Five Stars above belong to these individuals, however, it has to be said that stress could be avoided if you stock trousers that are the right length to start (I'm two inches taller than the average Australian man - there shouldn't be any reason to shorten trousers - but even if you do, this should be a free, and instant, service. You'd no doubt benefit from the additional sales.)
  • If you like shopping then you'll have plenty to do, but the food hall in the basement is great. Lots of fresh meats and bread and cheeses and salads and fruit and plenty more besides. You can 'dine in' with some seating scattered around, or take some yummy goods back home (or to your apartment) or maybe stock up a picnic basket for a lunch in the Botanic Gardens while punting around the lake. Not cheap, but great quality.
  • I was total disappointed at some La mer staff on the ground floor of David Jones in Bourke st. Very rude and indifference. I bought two very expensive products from them several days ago and the staff told me they did n't have sample now and asked me to come back two days later and she would tell another staff that I'm coming to pick up the sample. Two days later, I went there again and waited a long time there and another staff showed and told me she doesn't know. And only gave me one very small sample, saying it worth fifty dollars and their samples are rare. Come on. You just got samples in. If I know this, I wouldn't spend my time going to city. And she's so impatient and seems like hope I can leave asap. This is the worst time of my shopping experience in Melbourne. I experienced the service of la mer in DJ Chadstone, which is much better than that in bourke st. I'll never come back to the la mer counter in city again.
  • Significantly less range provided than its competitor in Myer and is of a premium price but is unable to deliver on the quality of the apparell
  • Good quality department store with an above average range of better quality goods and helpful staff.

Where to stay in Melbourne

The hub of tourist and commercial activity, the center of Melbourne remains the best place to stay if you're looking to splurge and enjoy every possible modern amenity during your visit. Travelers on a limited budget can search for cozy yet less expensive rooms in the seaside suburb of St Kilda or the bohemian neighborhood of Fitzroy. Though the city center offers more than a fair share of mid-range lodging options, you'll also find plenty of rooms in this price bracket in the quieter suburbs.
