Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Maleny

4.7
#1 of 7 in Trails in Sunshine Coast
Explore 55 hectares (136 acres) of subtropical rainforest at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Learn about the history of the rainforest on a walk with a volunteer guide, marvel at towering Australian red cedars, and spot wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, frogs, and crayfish. Keep your eyes peeled and camera ready for the various colorful bird species that call the reserve home. You might want to visit the Mary Cairncross Cafe before touring the reserve. It opens at 8:30 am for breakfast, and the purple hue of the Glasshouse Mountains and mist surrounding them makes for a prime photo opportunity. The view is remarkable, though, at any time of the day. Using our online itinerary creator, Maleny attractions like Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a beautiful reserve with amazing views of the the Glass house mountain's. There is a cafe the serves most meals though out the day and a discovery centre. The centre asks for a good coin donation which helps fund this amazing place. The discovery centre has lovely staff and lots of great information on the local plants and wild life, there is a great walk from within the centre that's not to hard and not to long which is well worth the look. There is a park next to the discovery centre which has BBQ facilities and toilets, there's plenty of room to kick a ball around our just relax and have lunch. If you look and stay quiet you may even see one of the local wallabies add they come very close to the reserve and don't seem to bothered by all the people. There are plenty of great spots to take photos so don't forget your camera when visiting, thou drones are not allowed around the centre and you might need a permit to use them up here. Just check with the local council of you would like to use a drone. Highly recommended this location when visiting the area.
  • Beautiful gardens and scenic walk, with plenty of space (and undercover benches) for a picnic. The museum is well worth a look, but keep in mind it's a gold coin donation (believe me they deserve it). Once you've done the the rainforest walk, there's a lovely cafe next to the museum that is well worth your time - there's stunning views of the glass house mountains. I recommend going to this place for anyone, especially families and couples (children will love the playground and interactive features in the museum).
  • This place is incredible. I went here for Boxing Day with friends and the scenic walks on the reserve were great, with plenty of photo opportunitiesčśüčî┐ It was a relaxing and awesome place, and I will definitely be coming here again when I have more time to explore the longer walking tracks I didn't have the opportunity to do previously. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting some peace and low impact exercise!
  • The several other rainforest walks we experienced in the area were good, but none matched the well-signed trails here. Take the time to walk around the full trail, and watch for the wildlife. The view of the Glasshouse mountains are superb too. (Their delicious coffee & sandwich selection is a nice way to regain some calories after the walk!)
  • Love this place. So much to do and see. We had lunch. Quite nice. Would definitely recommend this place for a visit.
