Clifford's Honey Farm, Kingscote

4.1
#6 of 25 in Outdoors in Kangaroo Island
Clifford’s Honey Farm is one honey producer on Kangaroo

Island. Dave and Jenny Clifford have been bee keepers since 1965 with the Honey Farm Shop Established in 1993.

Kangaroo Island is the world’s oldest bee sanctuary and is home to the only pure strain of Ligurian Bee in the world. Due to their isolation they have

remained free of the major bee diseases, which infect mainland bees. Bees cannot fly to Kangaroo Island because it is too far, even with strong winds to propel them. To protect their genetic purity and disease free status all bees, beehives, used beekeeping equipment, honey, pollen, beeswax or other hive products are restricted from entering KI.

  • When we got into the shop we were overwhelmed by all the products. In the adjacent room, there are some important display things and a video that runs about the process of honey production. This takes about half an hour to go through. Then we had honey icecream outside the shop in outdoors setting. Soon the tour started. We just went into the production facility and Cliff himself explained about the process. Usually it is not him that runs the tour. He may be one of the best in making honey but don't be disappointed if it is another person. Because he is not as good in conducting tour as in honey production process. He is one humble and honest person that you could happily spend time with. After some talking we were taken inside the hanger to see the actual machinery to understand how honey is extracted. So we could have done it a little better in this order: Watch display and video first. Then go to the tour / hanger. Then go into the shop to buy stuff and then have honey icecream before leaving. Find out tour timing first before going there. Support good local business and your kids will be getting job and they can buy house too. It is better than buying everything imported and then complaining about lack of opportunities for future generation.
  • The ice cream was simply delicious and the beer was quite interesting. Very good prices considering the uniqueness of the products. I would really recommend it as a must do activity of the kangaroo island.
  • A good destination to visit for Kangaroo Island honey products. There is also an educational component with a working hive and some history of bee keeping / honey production. Free picnic areas are also available so it is a good lunch stop for a picnic / packed lunch.
  • Best honey in Australia. Pure gorjus and the best. Also try the honey ice cream!!
  • One of the best honey I have ever tasted, especially Stringy Bark flavor. Reasonably priced place with a number of products (locally produced). A must visit place in Kangaroo Island.
