Maguk Gorge, Kakadu National Park

4.9
#3 of 11 in Parks in Kakadu National Park
Featuring the only waterfall inside Kakadu National Park that flows even when there’s no rainfall, Maguk Gorge is part of a large World Heritage-listed area. A natural pool forms at the base of the steep gorge, with calm waters surrounded by lush native vegetation. This irresistible swimming spot attracts thousands of visitors each year, arriving here after an exciting climb up a rustic trail. Camping areas with basic toilet facilities, as well as picnic tables and barbecues, are available nearby. Adventurous travelers can also choose a 4WD tour in and around the area. Keep in mind that freshwater crocodiles often live in natural pools such as this one, and although they are usually shy around people, they should not be disturbed or approached. A visit to Maguk Gorge represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Kakadu National Park road trip planning site to plot your vacation.

  • The photos do not said much to me. But the Kakadu PN pleasantly surprised us. It was for us the best of the trip. Don't see just people, their roads straight, solitary, eternal and rojas, the trees with their mostly charred trunks and their splendid green glasses, its crocodiles and their rich fauna, until the shortage of fuel, accommodation, restaurants and supply stores make Kakadu a unique destination where the natural pools charge special prominence, especially in an arid terrain where temperatures can reach 50 degrees as it was our case in October. The road is very long, salt soon and there devoted half a day at least!. Once you reach the car park road is not demanding and is well signposted. You will go parallel to the river and you will be notified of the danger of crocodiles, but in our case it seemed safe to being the River with low flow. The piscia is fresh water, so that is free of crocodiles. The water is hot and covers. An enjoyed approaching the shore and let cascade to massage you back. I always wanted and dreamed about that scene and I loved fulfil it. There were few people and we really enjoyed it.

  • Having missed a chance to swim at the pools in Litchfield (a shame) we decided to go to Maguk. While we are not afraid of a longish walk, we were unprepared for the rough, uneven rocky, boulder strewn...  more »
  • The entrance to the Maguk Gorge via a gravel road. In the dry season, a 4WD is not strictly necessary, unless for insurance purposes. From the parking lot to reach the rock pool in a 20-minute stroll. Even to the end of the dry season, plentiful water for a gorgeous bathroom is available. Also the waterfall splashes even if not too strong, it has the advantage that you can place underneath. A beautiful excursion not to be missed.
