  • I finally had an excuse to visit with my grandson visiting Brisbane from Canberra. It was a great day out. So much for kids to do with interactive exhibits that are both educational and fun. We spent ...  more »

  • It's tidy, and clean. Has history, science fun facts, a huge moving train model, and a kids playground. Got potential to be a great museum. But I think it needs a renovation to bring the overall look of the building up to date. So far it looks like a big old train shed. The second area looks undone. Potentially looks like a good area to display mini train models. Didn't manage to join the guided tour as we didn't wear protective shoes.
  • A great museum. Provides a vast library full of information for those willing to study the railways. The old 1200 class EMD is my favourite part as it is partially opened up so you can see the engine. Entrance and Gift shop is a bit pricey, however it is an awesome place.
  • This is a very beautiful & well maintained place . The staff is brilliant & very courteous. Kids also can have a good time with a lot of learning ... The train models & the live engines are a must watch... Technology explained in a lay mans language....
  • How can you call this place a "Rail Museum" anymore? The word "Rail Museum" has been dumbed down and filtered to an irrelevant level at Ipswich dramatically. As a Rail Enthusiast, I was mightily disappointed at the current state of the museum itself. As we arrived at the museum, the first thing that stood out to me was the use of useless information and exhibits. There was one steam locomotive with authentic rolling stock, however that was only 15% of the exhibits at the front entrance, because the rest of the exhibits were about butterflies. Butterflies... at a railway museum. Everything about wildlife is forced down your throat in the main museum. For example, I was admiring an 152 year old locomotive, and right next to the main exhibit was a small piece of paper with a stock image of a rhino with animal tracks: stating "these are my footprints!" I left the museum, mightily disappointed, and gobsmacked to know that most of the locomotive exhibits were shut away at the back. The Queensland Museum needs to get their heads out of their fat, money grabbing arses, and ACTUALLY MAKE THE INFORMATION THAT THEY PUT UP RELEVANT TO THE LOCATION!
  • Great displays of historic railway workshop equipment. Unfortunately the large collection of Thomas the tank engine play tables are not currently set up, our 4yo was a bit disappointed. The short tour of the working restoration workshop is worth the 30 mins it takes and it's free, just remember to wear enclosed shoes.
