Wave Rock, Hyden
(4.3/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
In a country full of geological wonders, Wave Rock stands as one of the most beautiful. The smooth northern side of Hyden Rock hill resembles an ocean wave about 14 m (46 ft) high and 110 m (360 ft) long. The strange beauty of the granite inselberg rock's beige, brown, black, white, and gray vertical stripes owes itself to spring water running down and dissolving minerals into the wall. Follow the rock contours on a walkway above it or on the pathway at its base. You can reach the nearby town of Hyden in four hours from Perth via a sealed road or one hour by air. Use our Hyden vacation trip planner to visit Wave Rock on your trip to Hyden, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • Despite the fact it cost $10 to visit it was pretty awesome to see Wave Rock. Parking here was easy even with a trailer.
  • We decided to go eRly morning and arrived at 06.30. We had the whole rock to ourselves and we're able to enjoy the walks and views before the heat set in at 09.00.
  • It isn't as large as I imagined it to be, but every aussie and every visitor to this country should see this natural phenomenon. I could only say 'WOW'.

  • Nice and simple campsite. All utilities provided plus wifi and a great outdoors area for cooking and relaxing. The astro turf tent pitches are also a nice touch!
  • An enormously geologically significant monolith. When you sit and think about how long it took for this rock to form, the importance of human kind is put in perspective. A great camping facility that hosts a very hip indy rock festival once a year. A must visit for all people.
  • Drove to Wave Rock in 2015 from Perth & returned same day, approx. 3.5 - 4 hrs drive (one way), very easy drive, not a lot to see on the way, though that is Western Australia. Good walking trails, Great rock formation & good to walk across the top & enjoy the views & watching the sunset. Great for a day trip or spend the night nearby camping or in a hotel close by. Images of the wave don't do it justice, need to be there to take it in.
  • Wave Rock is somewhat cool to see but not worth your time, this place is surrounded by concrete and nowhere near a natural scenery. They just want your money. Enjoyed the road from Perth much more.
  • As a passionate surfer it's awesome seeing this huge wave 400km inland during the spectacular exotic wild flower season. Great hospitality. Fresh country food cooked to perfection is delicious at the Hyden Motel.
