Wave Rock, Hyden

Geologic Formation
In a country full of geological wonders, Wave Rock stands as one of the most beautiful. The smooth northern side of Hyden Rock hill resembles an ocean wave about 14 m (46 ft) high and 110 m (360 ft) long. The strange beauty of the granite inselberg rock's beige, brown, black, white, and gray vertical stripes owes itself to spring water running down and dissolving minerals into the wall. Follow the rock contours on a walkway above it or on the pathway at its base. You can reach the nearby town of Hyden in four hours from Perth via a sealed road or one hour by air. Use our Hyden vacation trip planner to visit Wave Rock on your trip to Hyden, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • Really good to visit if you passing through. It was on my list to see and glad I did. Just wear sensible shoes as you do go up and down the granite. Once up top there are great views. Flies a bit anno...  more »
  • The rock is nice to see, even better when it is not crowded with tourists so pick your times. Right beside the Wave rock caravan park, you need to buy a ticket to get in. Go for a walk up on top after...  more »

  • It is well run and at $10 for a carload of people, not super expensive. the toilets are what one expects from a public loo. The rock itself was surprising in that it was smaller than I imagined but the views from the top were very nice. All in all, it is a LONG drive from Perth (over 3 hours) BUT it is the only wave rock in existence so I wold give it a go.
  • Probably a day's worth of things to do on and around Wave Rock. Walking, biking, cafés, museums, wildflowers in season, other rocks and caves, aboriginal art. Lovely area. Lakes all around. Well worth an overnight stay in the motels in Hyden or the camping ground at Wave Rock.
  • Wave Rock was on my bucket list, thanks to my daughter & partner we stayed overnight at the Wave Rock Resort and had a great time. The rock itself was great with good views of surrounding country, then Hippos Yawn , the museum and café. Good value and well worth the trip
  • Visited in 1983 and will have to do again. Nature at its most beautiful. Pity its so far from anything else but the sight makes it worthwhile.
  • We had a good time here. Beautiful formations of the rock.. but be sure to wear a fly net/ hat if flies bother you.
