Cascade Brewery, Hobart

4.2
#1 of 17 in Breweries in Tasmania
Founded by an ex-convict in 1832, Cascade Brewery represents the oldest still-operating brewery in the country. Set against the backdrop of a snowcapped mountain and surrounded by lush gardens, the brewery draws clean water from a nearby cascade for its brewing process. Join a tour to learn all about beer-making, and then reap your rewards with a tasting at the end. Pay attention to the label of the brewery's premium lager, depicting the extinct Tasmanian tiger. Note that you'll have to walk up and down a lot of stairs. Plan my day in Hobart using traveler tips and tourist information provided by Inspirock.

  • What can I say. Not as worthless as Cadbury but close. Pretty bad way to spend 90 minutes. The beer is the same as in a pub. The guide tried hard, but really - 15 minutes on OH&S and three stops at so...  more »
  • I saw a lot of brewery tours (and was a tour guide at a brewery for 6 years), but this was one of the least. Besides the many mistakens and process steps that weren't explained, we saw nothing of the ...  more »

  • Great tour! The guide was really informative and Cascade Brewery has a really interesting history. You get tokens to sample beer after the tour and we got extra free samples for answering the trivia questions at the end of the tour correctly. Great beer too! Not in downtown Hobart, but it was relatively easy to get to (there’s a public bus that goes from downtown Hobart to right across from the brewery or cabbing there is reasonably priced).
  • We had lunch and a couple of beers there. Pretty nice place. Didn't get time to do the tour. Trying the different beers was the best part! They have a very nice beer garden out the back, which you can walk along the different pathways to explore
  • I came here for lunch and it surprised me with how Cascade Brewery looks inside. The garden is lush, green and scattered with water features. The food was sensational. We especially loved the stout scones- well worth the price! On the day we arrived (Sunday), a bbq lunch was also an option, in addition to their menu. They had a great jazz band playing in the garden and the atmosphere was chilled. Well worth a visit- oh and grab a beer! Yum!
  • Had a very nice lunch here, even for a vegetarian. Great beers to try, so go for the paddle! I would have loved a tour, but we were running late.
  • Excellent tour. Guide was very knowledgeable and passionate. Tasting at the end was plentiful. Lunch was large and delicious

Hobart features a varied selection of budget and mid-range rooms located within striking distance of the central business district. You can choose from single rooms in small but comfortable hotels, or spacious suites with sweeping views of the Derwent River. If you want to avoid the central areas, look for rooms in North Hobart, where you can stay moments away from some of the city's finest restaurants. Throughout the city, backpacker hostels and pubs with rooms for rent provide another affordable alternative for those traveling on a shoestring.
