Albany's Historic Whaling Station, Frenchman Bay

4.0
#2 of 6 in Museums in Albany
Now a museum, the Cheynes Beach Whaling Station was Australia’s last operating whaling station when it closed in 1978. Albany's Historic Whaling Station displays the largest whale skeleton in Western Australia, a 22 m (72 ft) long pygmy blue whale skeleton. The former cutting-up decks and processing factory display whole vessels, harpoons, and ship models. Inside, view movies about marine life and whaling operations. Outside, explore the rusting Cheynes IV whale chaser and equipment. • Had a fantastic time and the Chinese visitors I was escorting had a great time. They've posted the photos and thoughts onto WeChat so I'm sure there will be more tourists who will love the experience. Loved the theatres but the best part was the tour guide. She was well informed, funny and made sure everyone had a great time.
  • This is not only a beautiful place it's also informative worth the visit. Entry on to the old whaling ship thought provoking. Great wee cafe with stunning views. Entry fee also admits you to the wild life and flora and fauna park next door. Great place to go
  • Is very clean and well maintained. Lots of information and our kids really embraced the experience. Bit pricey but kids are free. Some very good West Australian history.
  • Very good tourist destination... must see in Albany. The 3D movie was very entertaining. It was good value for money 👍
  • It would have been interesting but the price appeared excessive for what it was! To enter the indoor museum was free but information was minimal and related more to a series of images as to the different types of not only whales but seals, dolphins etc. There was an accessible area to walk outside and take pictures of the boat but unless you paid the pricey entry fee you could not get closer. It was actually really sad to read the encounters of man and whale. I can't say that I'd return in the future.
