#3 of 12 in Museums in Fremantle
Built by convict labor and opened as a psychiatric hospital called "Asylum for the Criminally Insane," Fremantle Arts Centre is known nowadays as a thriving creative space. The center attracts over 3,000 people to its outdoor concerts and almost as many to its exhibits and other art events throughout the year. Visit the galleries to see the latest trends in contemporary art. Inside you'll also find the offices for the Fremantles Art Center Press, a publishing house that puts award-winning authors to press. • This is the best and largest example of colonial gothic architecture in Australia. It is a great pity that that the building itself does not receive significant promotion. The exhibitions may be crap ...  more »

  • Absolutely terrible. There’s only about 4 exhibits on display. Some are quite cool, while others are quite disturbing. Other parts are restricted to the general public. Gift shop was pretty terrible as well. The structure was quite historical and looked amazing. It is completely free to enter which is on the plus side for me. Overall, the Fremantle Arts Centre is pretty poor, compared to other attractions in Fremantle. Don’t bother going here.
  • A Cultural Gem Fortunately this is one corner of Fremantle that the property developers have not been able to "improve" and that means that once you step through the gates you will enjoy a truly valuable public space - eclectic, friendly, and with a warmth that comes in large part from the heritage building. The exhibitions are often fun, thought provoking and suitable for a wide range of ages.
  • First time there for a wedding - beautiful grounds.. food was delicious and staff friendly. The little courtyard is perfect for intimate weddings.. and the trees provide enough coverage from the drizzles..
  • Fascinating historical building housing a museum, art galleries, cafe and classrooms. They have events on the surrounding lawns from small to large concerts and performances. The galleries are worth a walk-through and the cafe is really nice on good weather days as you can sit outdoors in the courtyard. They also have a gift shop with lots of local and artisan products.
  • This is an exceptional place with many free events. Their sunday afternoon free music events are fantastic..good food..free art exhibitions..the place itself is fantastic..heritage building. Friendly helpful staff..always a good vibe
