Religious Site Tourist Spot
Chenrezig Institute is a centre for Buddhist study, meditation, retreat, and practice nestled in the foothills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in Queensland, Australia. Established in 1974 Chenrezig Institute was one of the first Tibetan Buddhist centre in the Western World and remains one of the largest.

Today, the Institute is home to a Tibetan Geshe (Lama), a large community of ordained Sangha (monks and nuns), students, residents, volunteers, retreatants, and guests.

Apart from the formal study programmes, Chenrezig Institute is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to spend a few hours, days or weeks. Stroll along the bush paths, wander in the formal garden, sip espresso in the café, have a vegetarian meal, drop in for a meditation class or teaching, or just sit and listen to life.

  • Went and stayed for a course over several weeks. The grounds are nice. The nuns are lovely. The monks are nice when they occasionally participate. The regular staff were nice. Unfortunately, the management (specifically Steve) is rude, pushy and has a personality entirely unsuitable for a Buddhist facility. I must say that his attitude and behaviour spoiled the visit for me. Would not recommend.
  • Buildings are very old and rundown, food was ok though the stuffed capsicums are not my fav. Nice temple and garden but not much dharma, staffed by volunteers and few paid, customer service is not best.
  • Wonderful relaxed atmoshpere with friendly staff and very generous helpings. I would recommend lunch for casual visitors as breakfast and evening meal (called "supper") cater mainly for residents and staff with a smaller selection. My favourite place to take visitors to who are always impressed.
  • My favorite place ever ... so tranquil, friendly and beautiful ... I will go back there till my body tells me no more :)
  • This is one of the most spiritually infused places in Australia. One feels more at peace just being there. It is lush and beautiful for the eyes and nourishing for the heart/mind. A rare and precious sanctum of serenity and clarity in a crazy, mixed-up world. A true external refuge for the inner journey to become of primary importance. My favourite place.
