  • I took my friend and her father to Tamborine Mountain. I went for the first time recently and I enjoyed it so much the first time I went and thought all the people were friendly, many of the businesses quaint and unique and I strongly believe in buying from and supporting small businesses. We all three are obviously by our accents and look not local Aussies. We walked into this store for the first time and each were looking at the "3 pieces fudge" special so of course we followed people ahead of us in line and asked for a sample each as we sought to find our preferred 3 and make our choices since we wanted to pick new flavours we never had before and there were a few. I sampled *one* piece when my turn came and this rude lady who I think was either the chef or the owner started to tirade interrupted about how she can't give any more samples. To those who came before us and bought one piece (or didn't buy at all) after sampling several pieces she said nothing. But when three (non local and might I note as well non-white) people come into her shop, start sampling with intent to truly buy, she stops the girl attending us and can't give any more samples. I was so upset by her flimsy excuse that "Sunday is a busy day and she will run out" and wanted to not buy any since she was implying that my money and purchase was worthless, but I felt that to do so would deny me my sweet tooth and not do anything to change her poor attitude. I did not want to taint the experience of my friends with the pleasant experience to that point we were having with Tamborine Mountain people by calling her out and creating a scene so I also said nothing to them to make them aware that this isn't how you should be treated as a customer. However I did promise myself that I would give them this feedback later and share my experience on FB as a warning to others, and I guarantee the next time I am at Tamborine Mountain I will avoid her business entirely and advise any one i go there with to do so as well. She not only spoilt my experience in her store but has now tainted my perception of Tamborine Mountain folks as they had all been, till then, friendly and easy going. I hope someone gives her a bit more training on how to not assume because people look different from "typical" customers that she should not assume they don't have an intention to buy. We ended up leaving with 6 pieces of fudge and 2 ice creams just so no one reading this thinks we were trying to take advantage of any free "samples" given. But it is the last business from me she ever gets. Good luck when the Gold Coast games crowds come and she has to deal with more diversity than us as potential customers.
