  • We did the paid tour and were thoroughly entertained by Rudi, a miner who has worked the opal fields for many years. He gave us a fantastic insight to mining and dugout life. The displays of fossils and opalized shells are interesting and the opal shop is beautiful.
  • It's amazing place esp. for overseas tourits who are not familiar with dugouts. Everything is interesting, esp. if you do a guided tour. I liked the shop a lot with the wonderful stones and charming swiss lady who told us, she, originally coming from Switzerland, already lived for 30 years in Coober Pedy!
  • The free museum is rather basic but you get to see some interesting things in the paid tour. You can get a good sense of how the mining works and how the underground houses look and feel. They've done a decent job of presenting things for visitors but it does feel rather touristy. The large shop makes you feel like you're in an attraction rather than somewhere more authentic.
  • Umoona Opal Mine is a great educational museum in the heart of Coober Pedy! An underground tour within this business will give you the best summary of Coober Pedy's history
  • The information and artefacts were nicely displayed, however the main part of the museum was the jewellery shop! Friendly staff who were happy to show you jewellery without any pressure sales tactics.
